2019 – The Initial Plan

The clue is in the title, this is the initial plan, which is to say it hasn’t got a hope in hell of coming to fruition.  So why bother?  Well old working habits die hard (now there’s a title for a film, wonder if anyone has thought of that?) and I like the idea of objective setting and having some focus.  That said I’m not in the slightest bit bothered if I deliver against it or not.  This is my hobby after all and the aim is to enjoy it and if, as I suspect I will do, I choose to go off in a different direction at some point then that’s just what I will do.  I can be so rebellious when I want to be!

So, what do I currently have in store for 2019?

First up, but in no particular order are Knuckleduster Miniatures.  Possibly the finest range of Old Wild West figures on the market.  My modelling roots lie in this genre and I’m really quiet excited at the prospect of a major return to simply doing some figure painting.  With well over a 100 figure in the range (and being added to) it is my intention to do them all so expect to be bored silly during the course of the year (and probably beyond!).

Reaper will also feature this year in what I plan to do.  I’d like to do another dragon at some point but first up will be a boxed diorama.  I’ve only ever done one and I found it bloody difficult.  Expect some serious f’ing and blinding as I “enjoy” myself on this one!

Hasselfree Miniatures have also grabbed my attention and several figures have already been purchased.  Also sitting in my “to do” pile are quite a lot of WW2 figures, some 28mm and some 54mm.  Most of these are intended for the Plymouth Model Show in June where the theme is D-Day as it is the 75th anniversary of this landmark event.  I’m not sure how many I will get done but there is a time critical element to it so at some point I will have to get my finger out.

In the second half of the year I would really like to start work on my next mega project, mega by my standards that is.  It has long been a desire of mine to do a Western town diorama and if possible I’d like to get it under way this year.  Research is the biggest need right now and I’ve yet to fully decided between several ideas on how best to do it.

As if I didn’t have enough to do IRO suggested I do something around Rorke’s Drift.  To be fare it’s a great idea of an amazing historical event and a great film to provide further inspiration if more were needed.  This is one which needs a lot more thought so if I do go down this route it wont be for a while.  I might just go down the vignette route rather than a full blown diorama.  If that wasn’t enough he had some other ideas too!

Another dabble into the horror genre appeals but I need to get my head around this one as well.  Plenty of options but I’d like to do a film crew again for sure.

A look at my neglected pile left me feeling more than a little guilty but I hope to reduce it a little by riding off the back of some Azazel monthly challenges.  No rush though as the pile is far from inspiring me right now.

Away from actual modelling I’m hoping to attend a few model shows during the course of the year and entering a competition or two as well.  Standards are high but the idea of bench marking my work appeals to me and win or lose I find it motivational too.  In all honesty the best modellers don’t enter.  It’s a bit like asking the Beatles to do the Eurovision Song Contest, but I’m happy trying to become one of the best of the rest even if I have to embarrass myself along the way.

I’m also aiming to continue my weekly Musings, certainly for the foreseeable future at any rate.  I’m currently contemplating a new mini series of perhaps 3 or 4 posts in which I will reveal the cunning plan I implemented allowing me to spend as many hours a day as I want modelling with the full support of She Who Must Be Obeyed!  

Last but not least I think I have found a solution to my growing storage problem.  Alas plans A and B have had to be shelved for now owing to the reluctance of both my kids to move out but plan C has great merit.  Unfortunately SWMBO is also reluctant to move out so plan D, a garage revamp, is looking the most likely right now.

So there you have it, the initial plan.  Time will tell just what and how much gets done but whatever the outcome is hopefully the journey will be fun.

This week TIM has been listening to …

Another couple of tracks by ELO.  I couldn’t decide between “Rock’n Roll is King” and “Don’t Bring Me Down” so I went with both.  Great video’s accompany each although “Rock’n Roll is King” steals it for me.  Some brilliant movie clips in this one including “The Breakfast Club”, “Pulp Fiction”, The Wolf of Wall Street”, “Back to the Future”, “Love Actually” and “Footloose” (the remake).  I must sit down and watch all of them once again!

  3. Glad to hear you’re not using the wife’s closet…yet. Good luck on the rehab of the garage. I’m intrigued with your idea of a Rorke’s Drift piece, that would be epic.     1. Cheers Mark. I’ll check out the link in due course. Haven’t a clue what I may or may not come up with yet for that one but I’m sure there are figures out there for sure. Thats the beauty of this hobby, tbe creative element is infinite, if only my time on earth was the same! 😊

  4. I look forward to following your model making and musings this year. I reckon your Rorkes Drift themed diorama should have Bromhead atop the mealie bags shouting and name it…(insert Michael Caine’s accent here)… Don’t you throw those bloody spears at me!

    1. Haha, that’s the thing for all of us, we all have a plan and we all know even before we start that something better is going to come along and float our boat at some point. We just don’t know what and when but we know it’s coming! 😊

      1. Hunh, I just thought about that…I think it’s the opposite for me. Usually the things that are jumping the queue are ones that I just want to get out of the way or something that might be easy to finish up. Out of the models I completed last year, I can’t say any of them were ones that I really loved and wanted to do. I did have some that I started on recently, that I thought were going to be a chore, but I ended up really having fun with them. I should probably try and mix up the two, do something I’ve been wanting to do and some other stuff.

      2. Try the reward system. Every time you finish something that you really just wanna get done because it needs to be done, let yourself paint something that you really just want to paint because you really want to paint it as your reward.

      3. Yea, I was thinking along those lines. Maybe a single mini reward, before I move onto the next team. I’ve also just thought about alternating easy and challenging. The Van Saar have been a pain for me, so switching up with something else has been nice. Though that means I’m not getting them done with either…..especially since I have another box on the way….dammmmmmmit….

  8. Don’t Bring Me Down – great song, haven’t heard in a long time. Rock N’ Roll is King, not a fave of mine, but the video mix was pretty cool. Seemed to sync perfectly with the Breakfast Club clip.

    Ok, 2019. Sounds like you got lots of good plans. I’m sure I’ll like whatever you crank out. I’ll still suggest a post-apoc mini or scene. Though the Western and Horror film scenes will be very cool to see too. For the Horror film, would be interesting to see your take on an Argento film. All suggestions, mind you. Will see what roads you end up traveling in 2019!

      1. Just paint all the minis, all the time! 😉

        It’s funny to think, back when I first got into D&D, I could potentially (if I was a fast painter like Azazel) paint all of the Grenadier minis and then sit on my butt waiting for the next year’s release. Nowadays, there is just so much out there and covering so many different genres. I can’t even keep up with the release pace of the 2 specialists miniatures games that GW produces minis for!

  9. The Wild West town sounds awesome. I enjoy the research element to the hobby. Even though a lot of my work is fantasy I still enjoy getting names and ideas from history. I’m glad you’re doing something with Rorke’s although I’d prefer a full blown diorama with 4000 Zulu warriors hehe. On Marks Recommendation I’m going to watch washing of the spears! Make your garage into a man cave and also installs bed and beer fridge for when I come and stay!!!! I look forward to all your posts for 2019

    1. Like you I enjoy the research although sometimes it can be a little frustrating at times. Why don’t they make everything I want! The town is very much at the idea stage so won’t be going anywhere fast. As for 4000 Zulu’s I might have to mirror some how what they actually did in the making of the film. They only had about 500 Zulus and of course this was well before CGI so they had a Zulu at each end holding up a wooden batten which had 10 shields nailed to it. They made loads of the battens with shileds on to get the 4000 they needed! From a distance it looked great.

      2. I only learnt about it the other day when I watched the film again for the 100th time and followed up by watching the bonus material on the DVD too. It was a pretty low budget movie. Nothing wrong with CGI either in my book, some people don’t like it but all I’m interested in is watching a good film, don’t much care how they make it.

No no no Dave please, I love IRO and respect his input but no I’m begging you please don’t do another Rorkes drift dio ,that will only add to the other 50 I have seen !! , Maybe as he says use the 4000 Zulus you painted over the Chritmas break to do the Mega one but this time name it the “Just another British Colonial F.. K up and call it Isandlwana ,now that would be really cool Dave ,and if anyone can pull that one off your the man .

    1. I think you have hit the nail on head Pat. I like Zulu, the factual history too but as you say there are lots out there. I’ve done a few 54mm figures from the period and I may do a 28mm vignette at some point but I’m not sure a diorama is on cards, not for a while at least so you can relax!
