This weeks miniature is from Reaper and goes by the rather odd title of “Mad Scientist (Female).    She needs a name so I have decided to call her “Marie” after a girl I had a crush on at school back in the 70’s, not that she looks anything like her other than the red hair (I love red heads) and the blue eye shadow, very much a thing for UK girls back in the day.

A nice little figure (Marie had one too!) which I based using some bricks and a few old watch parts to add a little emphasis to the steampunk image.

A Hard Days Knight

Yesterday evening I took the plunge and ordered some knights from Footsore Miniatures along with a couple of other figures too.  It has been quite a while since I embraced this genre and decided for better or worse that it was time to do so once again.

I’m hardly short of figures to paint but I was motivated by the encouragement I recieved following a couple of recent Memory Monday posts which featured two mounted knights I had done sometime ago. Another consideration was that, aside from the one outstanding order I’m still waiting on, I have no deliveries pending. Receiving something in the post offers much excitement during my confinement and therefore there was a need to addess the matter.  I have a feeling I may have to address this need again next week too.  Probably the week after as well.  And the week after that.  And the week after that, and the week after that … !!!

Coronavirus – Self Isolation Week 11

Day 71 – Today I found myself thinking about 2015 and wondering how many people predicted lying on a sofa for weeks on end when asked “And where do you see yourself in 5 years time?”

Day 72 – The finger pointing has begun and questions are being asked about why certain things were done and why others were not.   The world is full of people who are happy to criticise but unwilling to actually get off their arse and do anything, it’s the easiest job in the world.  Have the various governments got it all right?  Certainly not.  Could they have done better?  Probably.  Have any of them had experience of this sort of thing before?  No.  Hindsight is twenty twenty vision.  Rather ironic given the year is 2020.

Day 73 – My dating days have long passed but I do worry for today’s teens.  With everyone wearing face masks the odds of getting an ugly bird/bloke have significantly increased.  Still I guess it has levelled the playing field somewhat.  As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder which is just as well as that’s about all you now get to see.

Day 74 –  Haven’t entirely figured out why yet but for some reason I seem to be able to get ready for bed much quicker these days.

Day 75 –  The more time I spend thinking about it the more I think we have missed a trick when it comes to making the world a better place.  I have long known the world has its fare share of idiots and morons, those who swim in the shallow end of the gene pool, I just never knew there were quite so many.  The pandemic has allowed these people to float to the top like a form of vile green algae.  We should have skimmed them off the surface and disposed of them while we had the chance.

Day 76 – At about this time last year I was in Amsterdam with She Who Must Be Obeyed and She Who Thinks She Must Be Obeyed 2 visiting the Anne Frank museum.  A very moving experience.  If you didn’t know Anne, before she was found, spent over two years in isolation hiding from the Nazi’s to save her life and the lives of her family.  I haven’t read her diary but I am guessing there isn’t an entry at about the eleven week point where she says “fuck this, I’m off to the beach”.

Day 77 – At the start of the UK lockdown the most vulnerable were told to self isolate for 12 weeks.  Next week will be the twelfth for my family and I.  Whilst a lot has changed it would seem our fate for now has not.  Some lockdown measures have been relaxed by the UK Government but we await the latest safe guarding advice of the Cystic Fibrosis doctors and nurses.  We anticipate no change but better safe than sorry.

  4. Great painting; I’m always so impressed with how much work you can do on such a small face. Her glove looks like Thanos’s Infinity Gauntlet, and her gun looks like it is in testing to be used by Dan Dare.

  5. Nice work on Mad Scientist Marie there, love the very sci-fi looking gun. Glad you and your family are still ok, I’m saying the same thing to my parents, best to stay safe and let everyone else rush off out to see if it’s safe.

    Day 72: the trouble is we’re being advised to stay at home and enjoy our hobbies, and one of my main hobbies is panning the government (honestly I’m pretty flexible, any government of any political persuasion will do, but I can’t get out of bed without giving a few politicians a verbal shoeing). Of course it goes without saying that given the opportunity I would have handled this crisis far better than any of them 😉

    1. Haha, we really need that beer or two to put the world to rights don’t we! 😉

      When it comes to the pandemic and the easing of restrictions I drew a comparison with WW1. If I were in the trenches and the shooting stopped would I stick my head up to see why or let some one else do it first?

      It helps that as painters and modellers we’ve been highly trained to be patient!

  8. I forgot about the eye shadow mate, good look on a redhead, did you try it out back then !! Ha Ha ! Love that song , and those stacked shoes ,didn’t help me at all as even the tall guys wore them, bugger bugger!!! looking forward to the knights !!

  9. Great work on the model, mate – the eye shadow and makeup certainly gives it a period look to go alongside the outfit, and even the style of her weapon.

    As for politicians, I think they do deserve a right fucking shalocking for the way they’ve all handled this. Not having experienced it personally is no excuse for wilfully ignoring the advice of your own scientists and research institutes that have been warning of this exact sort of thing for years, and in many governments’ cases, again as recently as the latter half of last year. Just because the steamroller moving towards you is moving slowly doesn’t mean you do as little as possible and let the fucking thing crush you because you hoped that it would just stop or go away. But, you know, MONEY.

    I was showing people at work stuff about this in January and Feb and telling them it was something to be concerned about and planned for, but we went on blithely, all business as usual right until the day before we got shut down.

    if you want to see a blackly humourous but darkly accurate representaion that’s pretty close to my opinion, check out Charlie Brooker’s Antiviral Wipe – the first 10 minutes in particular. I’d link it here but it seems that the BBC is nuking it from YouTube, so maybe your BBC player or when the BBC loses interest in taking it down from YouTube in a month or three.

      I remember as a very young kid my old man saying everything comes down to money. I’ve seen nothing yet which proves him wrong.

      At the start I felt the UK were slow off the mark. Then we had a spell when I thought it was being handled very well. Now the money men are squealing and applying pressure. Fuck everyone else, screw the work force, just make me money! Money talks and the politicians are listening and being swayed. The fucking thing hasn’t gone away and it will be interesting to see what happens when the second wave surely hits. We had a great chance to make this world a better place and I was excited about that but it looks like we will just go hack to where we were. Sad. Meanwhile the FTSE and koney markest continue to be manipulated.

  10. Hey Dave, great to be catching up, and Marie is awesome. I too start with the face, and hers is so cool (as is her gun). I do find small things impressive like the brickwork, and the colors and tones on her dress.

    Wishing you the best in the lockdown. We are slowly reopening but now with the anarchy in the big cities who knows if there will be a second wave. If not, certainly the logic of the lockdown must be questioned. If it does, the failure of politicians to deal with the riots will damn them. I’m glad to be able to chuckle at great posts like yours.

    1. Cheers Mark. Glad you like the figure and hope all is well in your part of the world. I’m still trying to see the lighter side of the situation, not to trivialize it but to retain my sanity, but people and recent events don’t make it easy!
