TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 82)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings! and my last post for 2020.

Before moving on may I wish each each and everyone of you and your families a Happy New Year.  I will do a review of 2020 in due course but I don’t think I will be sticking my neck out to far by saying thank goodness 2020 is over.  The New Year provides optimism for us all and with much talk of vaccinations here’s to hoping we can all return to our individual normal’s as soon as possible.

This weeks miniature is another double whammy and my last two 28mm American Civil War Confederates by Dixon’s, if not for ever than for this year at least.  Nothing I can say about these two which I haven’t said already about the others and that wasn’t a great deal either!  I can however confirm if you hadn’t worked it out already that the flag is not freehand.

Christmas

Well I hope that despite everything you all managed to have an enjoyable Christmas.  My own Christmas was more than a little strange.  For the first time in I don’t know how many years I didn’t get to the pub on Christmas day as it was closed this year.  As a consequence I was sober while eating Christmas Dinner and in the afternoon found myself still awake where normally I would have nodded off!  All in all a very surreal experience but as (hopefully) a one off it was actually OK.

Santa brought me a few things, a book I have been looking forward to getting and reading and of course several modelling bits and pieces.  Little in the way of figures this year (I really do need to work through my stash) but some much needed brushes, inks and paints which I am looking forward to using.  The main things on my list sadly did not materialise but then again it has been that kind of a year.

Give Me Five

Christmas having passed for another year made me reflect on what I received but more significantly what I did not.  I end the year with the top five things on my Christmas list that nobody could be arsed to put themselves out to get me!  Maybe next year will prove more successful.  In priority order for a change, just so family and friends are left in no doubt what I want for 2021, I give you:

  1. A hot date with Jenna Coleman
  2. A hot date with Jennifer Lawrence
  3. An E Type Jaguar Convertible (for my hot dates)
  4. Three World Cruise tickets (for me, Jenna and Jennifer, never travel without a spare!)
  5. Socks

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Rehab” by Amy Winehouse.  For all of us who over indulged at Christmas and will do so again when we say “Fuck Off 2020”.  Drink problem?  I drink, I fall over, no problem!

This week TIM has been watching …

“Last Christmas” starring Emilia Clarke.  A very enjoyable and seasonal family film.

  1. A belated Merry Christmas, an early Happy New Year and all that stuff to you mate! I did my best for you but sadly both Jenna and Jennifer told me that, what with the pandemic still running riot, they felt it would be irresponsible of them to take an older chap like yourself on a world cruise. However they did promise me that they’d keep their diaries open for this time next year so I’ll see what can be arranged. I believe all your other readers were having a whip round for the E-type Jag so I’ll leave them to explain themselves if it hasn’t shown up yet.

Fun fact, the inspiration for “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse came from a recording of whale-song. Researchers studying the animals’ communication believe that the original lyrics were “They tried to make me go to Ahab, But I said no, no, no”.

Nice work on those confederates, given that – as I recall – you weren’t too keen on them to begin with you fairly hammered through them. I’m sure you already know what I’m going to say – but if that’s them all painted a group-shot is definitely in order!

    1. Oh mate that means such a lot. You have offered hope where there was doubt. I always knew Jenna and Jennifer were the caring sort and at a time where my faith in human nature has been tested this is a welcome tonic. As luck would have it I am spending New Years Eve with Jenna in my living room. OK so it’s on the TV and she is in a new series but it still counts right? As for the E-Type I’m sure it will turn up shortly. Lockdown has a lot to answer for that’s for sure.

      Love the Moby Dick connection!

Spot on about the group shot. How did I forget to do that? Will add one to next weeks post.

  2. That is a nice little collection of ACW figs you have now, as I’ve said before I do like the Dixon range, I’m surprised you didn’t go for the Zouves though as I would have thought they would be more interesting to paint (I have some Louisiana Tiger Zouaves painted in the loft somewhere).

Next time I’m out with Scarlett Johansson, I ask her to give Jennifer a push in your direction!
But socks! you ask to much I think sir!!

I work in a car factory and it has long been one of my sayings to say to the other lads there especially when we used to work nights…..”You know some times I wish I’d gone into porn, like my parents wanted!”.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. I can’t remember quite what I had in mind when I bought them Roger but having now completed this batch I am tempted to look at doing another ACW diorama at some point. If I do I will take a look at the Zouves as they offer a colour contrast as well as a little more of a painting challenge.

Appreciate you having a word with Scarlett. Fingers crossed things work out with me and Jenna. You never know perhaps the four of us could meet up in Telford in November, even splash out on a spot of lunch at Wetherspoons? Just an idea no obligation. 😉

As for career choices it’s only when we are older that we realise what we really wanted to do with our lives. I misheard when people said you can make a career out of banking.

  3. Great work on the confederates TIM, that must be a mighty fine looking group now.
Don’t have a list for what I’d most like, as the wife always gets me something I’d like

  4. Nice minis, Dave! 🙂 Advance planning and purchasing over the entire year means I got not only everything I needed, but everything I wanted as well (I have to say that, since my wife might see my comments)! And not having an afternoon snooze on Christmas Day is pretty impressive! 😉

  5. Grumpy little Standard bearer. I can see him waddle annoyed on the battle field. I’m not so much into very cartoon-esque minis like these, but you did them very well, great love to detail on them, with their torn clothes like his cowboy hat. The kneeling one is easily a great pose and how you painted his clothes looks really organic so to speak.

You poor guy didn’t get socks?! That is mean. I feel for you, I always wish for socks to christmas and birthday as I lose my socks so often! This is truely sad Dave.

Lastly happy new year to you!

  6. The latest Civil War minis look great and I second Wudugast’s call for a group shot! You have to be getting close to a decent squad of them now, I would think. Glad to hear you got some good gifts but also sorry to hear you didn’t get others you wanted. I often find myself getting at least one thing once Christmas is up that I wanted and didn’t get, so I can relate to that! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in 2021 as well 🙂

      1. I wonder if it is a gaming thing. I know for me, I get excited to see a group of minis together because it usually means I can use them in a game in the near future. I am doing the same thing with 2021. I have some rough ideas but not making any serious plans and just going with the flow 🙂

  7. Confederates looking great, as there is a whip round for the jag you will be pleased to hear that I caught the delivery guys before they left with the one from me. I managed to swap it for the socks… so disaster averted. As for the young ladies I haven’t a clue who they are, it is my sheltered, hermit lifestyle on my Little Rock in the sea no doubt. But I did get back in contact (via carrier pigeon) with my old friend Lily Savage, who said she would be happy to take you on a cruise. She also said she had a novel way to present your socks.

  8. Haha when you said strange Christmas I thought I was in for some weird and wonderful story but no just an old man grumbling about not having a Nana nap and being unable to piss the day away with other bar flies hahaha. Lovely figures mate. The depth you created, especially on the flag bearer, is great. Too five for me looks like this. NPO: 1. Classic Mustang. 2. A rifle. (Not really for hunting, more for shooting targets like any boys that come sniffing around my daughters). 3. A hobby studio. (I’m lucky to have my Fungeon but I’d love a huge proper studio haha. Can’t think of anything else hehe. I’m a lucky and content man really but a harmless date with Margo Robbie might be nice.
