Scale Model World – IPMS Telford – TIM’s competition Results

The lead up to Telford, in addition to the weekend itself, left me with no time to paint.  Accordingly my normal Miniatures and Musings post has been hit on the head for this week.  I’m also up against it for a weekend post too but I have a couple of days so maybe something very basic will get done, we’ll see.  Thereafter I hope to return to normal as I do like some semblance of order in my life whenever that is possible, a rare occurrence these days it seems.

What I do have this week is a post on how my models fared in the competition, really done for me as an audit trail because at some point in the future I will have no idea of what did what and when!

Commended

Models which fail to win Gold, Silver or Bronze but catch the judges eye can be awarded a certificate of Commendation.  This is an achievement in itself and I was awarded three.  In Class 54 – Foot Figures 60mm and Smaller I received Commendations for The Old Fiddler and another for Zonkers The Clown.  In Class 84 – Diorama Figure I was commended for Fools Gold.

Bronze

I won two Bronze medals.  The first was for Oh My God! which was entered in Class 86 – Diorama Sci-Fi Fantasy and the other was in Class 73 – Single Figures 60mm and Smaller for my wizard Viharis Tenspire.

Silver

In Class 56 – Mounted Figures 60mm and Smaller I received a Silver for True Grit.

Gold

My first Gold was also in Class 56 – Mounted Figures 60mm and Smaller and was awarded to Sire Huge Thalemache.  Personally I would have awarded gold to True Grit but I’m not complaining!

The second Gold I received for a model I had done a couple of years back and thought I’d have a go and enter it.  The model in question was named Wells Fargo 1881 and won Class 83 – Diorama Civilian Vehicles.  I was very pleased with that as this has long been one of my personal favourites.

The third Gold was, as several of you guessed, awarded to The Wizard’s Tower in Class 86 – Diorama Sci-Fi Fantasy.  I was told by one of the judges that it was the class winner as soon as they saw it, a compliment I was more than happy to receive.

Best Diorama In Show

Individual Classes feed up into a hierarchy of categories, so for example there are eight classes within the diorama category.  Once the winners within each class have been determined they are judged against each other to determine the Best In Show Diorama.  I had Wells Fargo 1881 and The Wizard’s Tower competing against  each other for the award but there can only be one winner and the judges determined that The Wizard’s Tower was it.  To say I was chuffed would be an understatement.  To coin a football expression, I was over the moon!

The winners of each of the eight categories are then judged against each other to determine the Senior National Champion.  For a while The Wizards Tower was, along with seven other amazing models, being considered for that accolade.  Alas it was not meant to be the winner.  There is no second or third awarded so The Wizard’s Tower could have been the runner-up or anywhere down to eighth.  In any event I have no complaints.

If anyone had ever said my work would one day be judged by modelling experts and awarded a Best in Show I would have said there was no chance of that ever happening.  It’s a funny old world!

A Couple Of Things To Note

In closing I thought I would share something with you and bring to your attention something you may not have noticed.

Firstly, the level of detail the judges look at is incredible.  The chap who was one of the judges of The Wizard’s Tower who I mentioned earlier also asked if I had done the Oh My God! diorama too.  I said I had and then he took me to where the model was to bring something to my attention.  He pointed out a mold line about an eighth of an inch long that I had missed.  Apparently that blemish cost me the Silver medal!

Secondly, Scale Model World which is run by IMPS UK is not a war gaming show, it is open to models of all scales on an equal footing.  Interestingly all three of my Gold medal winning models were won using 28mm scale figures.

  1. Well done! All of your entries are beautifully painted model a and dioramas. Very deserved accolades.you probably don’t need that Wizards Tower anymore, so feel free to send it my way. I’ll store it for ya!

  5. All of the awards were well deserved, Dave! 🙂 I think I’d have gone with True Grit but the choice would have been a difficult one to make. They must really scrutinise everything in detail to spot such a small length of mould line that you’d missed (well, you didn’t miss it, someone carefully added it to sabotage your chances I reckon)! 😉

    1. Cheers Alex and I really appreciate the very kind words. Accolades from ones peers always mean so much more. Oh, and next year you really should try to get there. I gather Salute is back to April again next year so maybe there is another opportunity to meet up. 🙂

  7. The judges are blind in my opinion as I think all your entries are bloody gold mate! Although them noticing the mould line would tell me that they’re not blind just picky bastards haha. Nah bless em, they’re doing their job and it’s good they’ve got a good eye for detail. Would you like to be a judge? I think you’d be a fair one mate. I hope you feel proud mate and I really hope all those wins have only inspired you to reach for the stars man. I look forward to normal broadcasting soon but I’ve enjoyed your adventure to Telford.

    1. Thanks for the kind words mate. The judges are detail crazy but with the standard so high it’s very minor things which determine what wins and what doesn’t. Not sure I’d like their job but if asked I guess I would have a crack at it. I certainly feel good about how things went but the way forward is less clear right now. Glad you enjoyed the posts. 🙂

  10. Its interesting to hear how detail oriented the judges are. I’ll keep that in mind if I enter into a show in the future. All of the models and dioramas were great and it was interesting to see which ones caught the judges eyes. I think it is impressive the older models faired well too. It would be easy to think that your latest work is your best but that’s not always the case! Except for the Wizard’s Tower, that one is recent and one of your best for sure 😀

  11. Thanks for sharing your scores, I hope you are very pleased with them!
    I also get what you mean about True Grit being better to your eyes than the Knight, however I wonder if the put the Knight higher due to the technical challenge of the free hand? However I suppose its less important when it arguments over which of your models gets Gold and which gets Silver!

    1. Thank you, I was truly delighted with how things went, more than I could possibly have imagined. As to the judges and their decision I concluded the same as you and that’s something I shall have to consider with anything else I do and think of entering in the future. Whether I can manage that though is something else intirely! 🙂

  12. Judging all that must be an absolutely herculean task. You said there were 80-odd categories (with god only knows how many entries) and they’re still taking the time to spot a mouldline an eighth of an inch long? Fair play to them, that takes some real passion and commitment. Well done on all the awards, all of them highly deserved. Good to see Wells Fargo getting its moment in the sun, I’ve always really liked that one. Also am I the only one (apart from the judges!) who agrees that Sire Huge (who still sounds like a star of “adult entertainment” to me) deserved the gold over True Grit? Not that True Grit isn’t great, and on any other day would deserve a gold, but Sire Huge just stands out in that checkered livery. I’m guessing that was a particularly popular and hard fought category too so well done again on two wins there.

    1. The judges are pedantic for sure but I can understand why, they have to find fault some where. As for Sire Huge the more I think about it the more I realise how inappropriate the name is. As for him winning I think you are right, they have classed him as more technically difficult I reckon too. 🙂

  15. Well Young Dave you have certainly done well, I’m not surprised though as when I first see you work I tend to say to myself ,That’s a winner! The Wizard Tower was as cert to get a nod but as no way Sir Huge was going to miss out ! like Wuda said he stands out and the work involved is amazing!! Congrats mate you deserve a huge pat on the back and I’m not surprised you were over the moon ! I would still be there if it were me!!!
