TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 40)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

TIM’s Mid Week Miniature

This weeks figure, a 28mm sculpt of a Rat Catcher, comes from “Other World” miniatures.  Originally when I bought this figure I had other plans for it but it was so long ago that I had forgotten what that was so I just painted him and put him on a 25mm base!  It’s an age thing.  If I ever do remember then I guess I will have to buy the figure again.

The base, not clear from these images, was constructed using coffee stirrers to make a wooden floor.

Well It Made Me Laugh …

Time for a Project?

Just lately I have been painting stand alone figures and and a few vignettes which have required a bit more base work.  It has all been fun and I have enjoyed what I have done and am looking forward to doing what I have lined up on my desk still to do.  However, I recently got the urge to embark on something a little bit bigger.  The driving force behind this is Telford in November.

After last years surprising success I am keen to enter a couple of things for this year, especially in the Fantasy Diorama category which I was lucky enough to win gold in.  I remain convinced that part of the reason for that success was entering something which was a little different.  If I am to stand a chance this year I feel I need to hit the same note again.  Having been racking my brains I came up with two ideas.  I favor one far than the other not least of all because it will have more detail in it.

Having had the ideas the challenge was on to find the right figures and determine how to base them.  I have had a few ideas for the basing and have managed to find appropriate figures for the better of the two ideas.  Work on it has now begun.  It will I suspect feature several WIP posts due to drying time and the such like but I will try to spread these out with other bits and bobs as I go along.

For now I only have a working title, I am currently going with “OMG!”  Maybe the title will stick, maybe it wont but for now at least I will leave it with you to consider what I might have in mind.  The first installment should get posted this coming Saturday.

This week TIM has been listening to …

Cat Stevens and “Where do the Children Play?”.

Now before he went and changed his name to Yousef something or other and became a bit weird good old Cat had a few good tunes in him, several quiet deep and meaningful such as this one.  Clearly not everyone’s cup of tea but as I have said on previous occasions my music taste is very, very wide and varied.

This week TIM has been watching …

“In The Heat of the Night”.  A classic film from 1967 starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger.  A ground making film for its day and remembered by those who have seen it for the immortal line “They call me mister Tibbs”.

Remember …

If you are ever chased by a pack of taxidermists don’t play dead.

Until next time.

  1. I don’t know if it’s an age thing, the number of miniatures I have kicking around which I got with a plan in mind and then forgot the plan doesn’t bear thinking about. Worse, given my tendency to convert and kitbash, are all the bits that I got because I planned to use them in a clever conversion and then forgot entirely what it was going to be. Ah well, most of them get recycled in the end.

Lovely job on the rat catcher, nice miniature as well, not one I’d seen before but I like it. Very curious to see this bigger project that you hint at, I’ll be waiting with baited breath!

    1. It’s definitely an age thing. The reason I’m confident is because it is the only excuse I have! The bigger project isn’t huge but it will take a good few weeks from start to finish and if I want to continuing bloging then WIP posts will be all I have.

  2. Really nice mini there man. Full of character. I’m excited to see what OMG is going to be. I just like that you’re so down with the kids that you’re using abbreviations haha. Hmmm what could it be though? Could it be a young blonde damsel in distress screaming at a giant monkey? Could it be a very happy maiden in bed with a rather confident Casanova? Or maybe it’s a millennial complaining because she has to do the dishes? Love your taste in music. I haven’t called you Dad in a while, nor have you called me son so let me just direct you to Cats song “Father to son”. It’s our song mate, it’s our song hahaha.

    1. Well I hope OMG doesn’t disappoint given the ideas you have come up with! I do like the King Kong idea though I must say. Cat did a few good songs, Father and Son being a great example (bugger, everytime I hear that now I will think of you!), and it was a dilemma knowing what one to go with. I suspect I will post another track or two at some point in the future.

  3. IRO’s gunned you there mate, what with the kids speak! bloody happens when you have one in the house! With all the shit going on around the world one thing that is reassuring is you two banging on as it should be!
I’m liking the feel about a bit of Diagraming going this year, what with yours and IRO”s big one ,it feels like its going to be a good one.
Sorry mate the rat catcher is great but we are still getting over your last one !!!
And yeah mate you can’t beat the Cat !

    1. It is funny how some of the kid speak rubs off, fortunatley I have managed to resist my sons taste in music which is shit! To be fair he does like some of my stuff though. IRO has certainly taken on quite a task but I reckon it will be a good diorama when done.

  4. i love your dioramas and the way you paint, they really tell a story, no wonder you took gold. OMG i havent got a clue what that could be, it can apply to so many ideas, it could be an axeman showing his lady friend the size of his chopper? just a thought, cant wait for it to show up. Your choice of music and film is right up my street too, Mathew and son is one of my favourites…

  5. What an impish figure, though I must admit I’ve never heard of a rat catcher before. His face has so much character – congrats on that achievement. Good luck with OMG for Telford. At present, OMG reminds me of every minute I see the news or how the stock market is melting down. Looking forward to what you come up with for OMG.

As for Cat, yes, he got weird. Still like some of his songs too.

    1. Rat Catchers go back to the dark ages, your country isn’t old enough! 😉 Know what you mean about OMG and shares. I’m down around £20k at the moment and have stopped looking at the index. No point selling now just have to wait for the up turn. Ho hum.
