“Finn” – Zombie Killer

This 28mm Hasslefree figure goes by the name of Finn and is one I have done before.  The previous paint job was plain as was the base work.  Nothing wrong with that but I just felt after I had done it I could have made it a little more interesting.  Nothing over the top just a bit more personalised.

As I have started to get more and more into freehand I wanted to do something on this little chap but couldn’t think of anything appropriate.  Then my daughter walked in with an old hoodie on and that inspired me to add “Leaver 20” reflecting what the kids wear when they leave school.

For the base I wanted to go with a zombie feel while at the same time keeping to the 25mm square footprint.  Not sure what inspired the hands and head coming out of the ground but once I had the idea it became a must.

Pictures below.

  1. Looks like this guy is about to have his day ruined, pinched on the bum by a zombie – that’s a terrible thing to happen to anyone! Finn is looking great but I have to say the way the zombie looks dirty from the ground and badly decayed is very good, given me some food for thought for next time I tackle the living dead. 🙂

    1. Thank you, glad you like the Zombie. I’ve had this idea of having Zombies coming out of dark places, just body bits rather than having a whole figure. Thought it might be different and space saving too on small bases. This is the first for now but all being well others will follow in due course. 🙂

  2. Awesome work, I totally missed the zombie in the first couple of pictures, I just imagined it was some form of plant or something. Now that I see him I reckon it really looks like he is clawing his way out of the ground.

  3. Excellent work TIM, the zombie emerging from the ground adds real interest to the base.
With the letterman jacket, you have a real chance of freehand with all the different college symbols you see across America

  4. Really cool, though Finn needs to adjust his aim a bit! I do echo Wudugast’s comments, really nice rot on the zombie. If you want free hand challenges on tshirts, we have sooo many here! Just start with ones I wear 😁😁😁

    1. Cheers Mark. I think T-Shirts are a great source for freehand, knights are another. Being able to deliver though is another matter entirely but hopefully incremental challenges and practice will enable me to improve further. It’s very rewarding when you get things looking good though. 🙂

  5. Love the emerging Zombie, I did something similar with a Gravestone objective marker a few years back. (it’s a great way to use up the odd bits of figures you have left, that’s not a macabre as it sounds 😉).

    Cheers Roger.

  6. Ooh, I think the zombie really works with how desperate Finn looks (especially his wild-looking hair). As others have said, I really like the way you painted the zombie too. It looks a bit different than the more conventional ways a lot of people paint them. While I’ve said this about other genres, I do think you have a knack for post-apocalyptic minis and I will look forward to seeing what else you paint in the genre 🙂
