TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 138)

A Brief Introduction

You have to go back to the 12th September for my last post and back even further to January the 26th for my last under the heading of “Miniatures & Musings”.  The reality is I needed a break, not just from blogging but from other things too.  A period of reflection if you like. All deep and meaningful I know but sometimes there is a need to assess life’s priorities and align that to just how much time you have.  I reached several conclussions (I’ll spare you the analysis), one of which was I wanted to carry on blogging but would adopted a less ridged approach to doing so.  This translates into I will continue to blog but post when I feel like it.  Today I feel like it! Quality versus quantity?  Um, now I’m probably taking it to far.

One thing I felt I needed to settle on was the basic formatting of my posts.  I decided that whatever I was working on would be posted under the banner of “Miniatures & Musings”, at least until I’m inspired to take on a project worthy of its own title and series of posts.  “Miniatures & Musings” gives me the freedom to waffle on about whatever takes my fancy be it modelling, painting or just a personal rant to get things off my chest in this ever increasing screwed up world.  So, without further ado let’s chuck out a mini for you to look at and then talk about some random stuff as the mood grabs me.

The Barons War

What we have here is another knight from the Footsore Miniatures Baron’s War range.  Yes, I may have been away for while but I’m still into painting knights.  I decided this one would be mounted on its own plinth and not an addition to my army.

Painting Plans

Right now I must confess to lacking a great deal of inspiration.   It isn’t for the want of trying but creativity isn’t exactly pouring out of me at the moment.  I have the desire to want to do something but really can’t get excited about any of the ideas currently swirling around in my head.  I’ve been here before and doubtless I will be here again and generally the problem takes care of itself.  Inspiration comes from the most unlikely sources sometimes so I just need to be patient.  In the meantime I have a number of Baron’s War figures still to do and I will continue painting them until I’m motivated to do something else.

And Finally …

While the conflict in the Ukraine continues to grab the headlines, and understandably so, there is howver another battle going on within our own sphere, specifically the Ork challenge between IRO and Wudugast.  The fallout from this continental collision promises to be huge and I for one am waiting to see just how the world will look once peace has been restored.  In the meanwhile I’m reminded of my one and only time of painting an Ork.

Please do not assume my allegiance is aligned to one particular blogger.  Contrary to the image below I am very much behind the winner who ever it might be! 😉

  1. I get you, TIM. Sometimes its just too much effort to write. Sometimes it flows.

I honestly don’t know how guys like you were able to put out so much consistent content. or, have the time to do it.

I, for one, am always happy to see some of your hobby musings, on whatever topic!

    1. Cheers mate. Inspiration comes and goes and that I know will resolve itself but the killer these past months and the same goes for the future for now is just a lack of time. Despite being retired there just aren’t enough hours in the day for the things I now have to deal with. ☹

  2. Wonderful work on the Knight Dave, the heraldry lines are excellent. As the muse descends you need to seize, but trying to push can be counter productive, do what feels right when you want, we’ll be here to look in awe when you do.
Ork brutality could be devastating, so am following closely to make sure it doesn’t spill out further.

    1. Thanks John. I’m still very happy painting when time allows but I’d like to get inspired for something bigger and to be able to find more time to blog as well but right now these things are against me. All will be resolved in time I’m sure. 🙂

  3. I’m glad to see you back and go where you motivation and inspiration takes you. That sounds kind of hippie-like but I think if you do that, you’ll be cranking out painted minis again in no time! You may try doing a bit of window shopping online to see what sculpts or genres speak to you. That usually gives me ideas and inspiration for better and worse!

I love the latest knight and I think he’s one of the toughest and most intimidating looking ones you’ve painted yet. I’m not surprised that you favor your hobby son in the competition either 😉 All I can say is that it is good that you aren’t serving as a judge/referee in the competition! 😀

    1. Cheers mate. I’m fine with painted minis but would like to get inspired for something bigger that I can sink my teeth into. It seems the harder I search for inspiration the more it eludes me. Out of nowhere something will crop up, it certainly has done so in the past. I do love IRO and his work but Wudu is a different talent entirely. As I know what IRO looks like it made it easier to find a sculpt that mirrored his image! 😂😂 If I ever get to meet Wudu then maybe I’ll get a sculp painted to mirror him too!

  4. Totally with you mate, I’m up to my arse in grass and weeds on the block, getting things in order for a big family reunion I’m holding soon has cleared the old brain and stopped me running of on a tangent!! All I have to do is a small How to do! after all that has happened I think I will finally finish of a few old Dios that have been hanging around my neck like mill stones!
Mate! the knight is so good and that bloody joke had me in so many tears I had to call Jill to see it!!!
I have to say that bust Of IRO is pretty impressive but I have to agree with Faust!!

  5. Nice to see musings back mate and I think the new format will work well. It’s always more fun when you want to do something rather than feel you should do something. The knight looks great and I love the movement in this one. I feel like this years battle with Wudu will be more intense, tougher, than last year. We drew even last year so I think we are both keen to make sure that doesn’t happen again!!! Love the Ork my friend and it’s nice to see it again. I saved the pic this time and now have it as the wallpaper on my phone haha

  6. I think you deserve a break after that epic Diorama you did mate, no wonder you where feeling a bit burnt out.
It’s good to see you still painting though and I do like your wooden plinth mounted work, this one as ever looks great!

  7. What’s this? Miniatures and Musings returns and I get a mention! What more could anyone ask for? Not sure why you’ve included a photo of IRO though – I’m much more handsome! Great work on the knight and good luck finding your inspiration again – I’m sure it will return when it’s good and ready and you find the right project. 🙂

  8. I really missed that segment TIM.
The knight is beautiful – again a model I had also my eyes on. 13th-14th century has some interesting armor-advancements after all. Like the shift from purely mail/gambeson to coat of plates, shin-armor/elbow armor and shoulder-armor/pauldrons, brigantine and finally plate. Totally interesting stuff! Even more interesting how helmet-types changed and devellopped.
Great job with the base and very neatly done heraldry.

Music and visuals are still missing in this segment however!

Btw.: here is an idea: do some WW1 again or maybe some late medieval/renaissance, there you can go and advance your heraldry/free-hand-techniques. ;D

    1. Thank you. The Knights are fun so it’s not proving difficult to keep painting them but you’re right to point out the different periods and that is something I might look at more closely. As for music, TV and movies I’m sure they will make a random come back in my posts at some point. 🙂
