TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 142)

This Posts Mini Is …

… not one but two Footsore Baron’s War knights.  I’m trying to get my backlog of these all done but I’ve a little way to go still.  Fortunately it’s not too much of a problem as I enjoy painting them although these two are a little scruffy for my liking.  I do have other figures to paint which aren’t Baron’s War ones so I will aim to mix things up a bit going forward for the purpose of variety.  For now though just painting figures is what works best for me.  That said I am mulling over a couple of little diorama ideas which may or may not get off the ground at some point. 🤔

Telford

Telford was once again a great weekend and the standard was higher than it had ever been.  This year’s competition was incredibly tough and was always going to be a hard act to follow given my success last year.  I only entered a couple of models this time around and neither won a medal.  I did however get a “Commended” for my Earls Visit diorama which I’m happy to take given the standard of models on show.  I lost to worthy winners so no complaints from me.  With all the will in the world I cannot compete with scratch builders.  I think I read that there were over 1400 competition entries this year which gives you an idea of the scale of the show too.

If you are wondering why there are no photos the answer is a lack of blog capacity.  I need to make some blog changes before to long as I’m nearing capacity yet again.  I would however recommend checking out YouTube and the IPMS Facebook page to see some incredible models as and when you have the time.

Meanwhile note to self – ” Must try harder!”

Climate Change

With COP27 in the headlines recently the subject of Climate Change has been topical in the house of TIM.  As subjects go it is one which divides opinion.  Personally I’m in no doubt that climate change is real and I’m equally accepting of the fact that man is adding to the problem.  Although I’m no expert on the subject I can’t help but wonder if the planet isn’t naturally evolving too?  After all we’ve had ice ages come and go in the past haven’t we so why the surprise that glaciers and the like are melting now?

Whatever the science there is one thing I am completely convinced of and that is the world and its politicians will never resolve the situation because they will never agree on what to do and then truly commit to it before it’s to late.  Political hot air is simply adding to the problem and far to many governments are only interested in the here and now.

Rather than waste time and money on how to halt temperature rises and all that it brings with it I wonder if scientists and governments would do better to spend time working on just how we can learn to live with it instead?

In the meanwhile I might see if I can come up with a Climate Change diorama of vignette of some kind. 🤔

And Finally …

Do you ever wonder what it would be like if there were no hypothetical questions?

  1. Lovely work on both of these chaps. I particularly like the stripey guy – both for the stripes and the freehand cross on his shield. You’ve certainly hit on the immediacy of politicians. For the most part, they’re all about power and money now, and damn the future!

  2. Those are nice knights, Dave! 🙂 You nearly caught me out with a post in the evening! Glad you enjoyed Telford and well done getting “Commended” for The Earl’s Visit (the winners must have been outstanding if they were judged better than yours)!

    1. Thanks John. Given the standard I was happy with the Commended and no complaints as the winners were excellent. Hard to compete with scratch building though, it’s on another level. Got excited yesterday when driving and had to explain to SWMBO the significance of the car registration I saw – JNV1. 🤣🤣

  3. Awesome and inspiring work as usual! Love the meme, and so did the wife! (I think she was glad that Peter set the bar so low for me!).

Climate Change. For a long time I was in the camp that it’s a little god-like to think we putty humans could think we are changing the climate on a global scale, and part of me still feels this way (If we could why not have the Weyland-Yutani Corporation already??). However, we definitely can affect the climate, soil, water and general health locally. This means that doing every little bit we can as individuals is a good thing. And Yes politicians don’t care about anything other than getting re-elected and skimming more coin into their pockets!

Lastly, Are the Footsore Baron’s War knights still in production? As you minis are seriously tempting me to jump back into painting Knights!

    1. Thanks Eric that’s very kind if you to say so. Agree with your climate change comments. We can do stuff as individuals but sadly we need the govenments on the big stuff and they aren’t fit for purpose it seems to me. Would be great to see you do some knights. They are very much in production in fact they are a relatively new range which you can find on the Footsore Website.🙂

  4. Both Knights are excellent Dave, and great that you working your way through the remainder you have.
Congratulations on the commended, and your not wrong scratch built is a wholw other level.
Don’t talk much on politics, as all politicians only ever have one goal, what’s in it for them. They are the modern equivalent of lords and kings of medieval times, and rarely give a damn about the common person, where the sword has been replaced by money.
With climate change, if every household did their part, it wouldn’t equate to all the harm that big business causes, so that should be the target, but they are the ones financing the politicians !

  5. Nice work on both miniatures mate, lovely stripes!

Also congratulations on the commented result, with that much competition to come away with that is pretty much a win. 😉

I agree totally with you about climate change, politicians talk a good game (look at how our government keeps banging on about how well they are doing, then push back date when environmental targets have to be met and talk about building more coal mines and gas platforms!). I’m sad to say I can’t see the world making the deadline of the point of no return!

I saw a really scary film about a demonic teabag the other night, I was amazed it had a PG rating!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Cheers Roger.

  6. The knights are looking great and the love the freehand designs on them. I’m the subject of awards and climate change…just like a good politician, we need to get me elected to that panel of judges. With the right kind of money, I can make sure you win!!! Seriously, I bet I would have picked the Earls Visit to win, because I think that was an amazing piece.

  7. Congrats on the “Commended” award at Telford and sorry more was not accorded your work, but you may become a scratch-builder yet. Loved these two knights – your usual fine work. As for climate change, I’m an optimist. The climate has always changed and always will. At one point in history the earth was an ice ball, and a hothouse at others, all well before we were around. And did you know the ice caps on Mars are melting? Somehow, we’ll be fine buddy! Not going to say more here (saving that for our chats!).

  8. Lots to chew on in this update, mate! The knights look great as always and I look forward to the diorama you’re thinking about too.

In terms of Telford, what category were the scratch builders doing well in? Dioramas? I can see that skill being a real advantage there. In other categories, I reckon a scratch builder wouldn’t have so much of an advantage such as a single miniature category.

In terms of global warming, there has been enough strange weather in the US the last couple of years to fully convince me that its happening. Florida, in particular, seems to be changing before our very lives and I’m glad to not live there. I don’t know if the US will ever make meaningful progress on global warming sadly. One party is trying to move towards it and other just wants to undo any changes that get put into place. With how the two parties trade power frequently, it seems like its going to be tough to make any real change which is very disheartening.

Having said that, I have seen some awesome dioramas done on a theme like pollution and the environment. I have an idea but lack the time to work on it, maybe one day. What I’m really getting at is that I’d love to see your take on a topic like this and am very curious to see what you’re thinking about 🙂

    1. The scratch builders are pretty much in every category although less so when it comes to just figures. Some folks are literally building all kinds of things including vehicles from scratch and the results are even better than those you can buy. How the hell they do it I have no idea. One things for sure I can’t compete with that skill level.

As for global warming our weather in the UK gets stranger year on year. Something is definitely happening but I think it is beyond man to stop. Like I said, better to start thinking how best to deal with it I reckon.

      1. I see. I did not know scratch building was that common in our hobby. I’ve known a person or two who can seemingly make something out of nothing and I can’t compete with that sort of skill either.

  9. Nice knight mate, the bases are pretty neat, a bit different from your usual. I’m surprised you didn’t do better with that amazing Dio mate but II suppose with 1400 entries it would have been pretty stiff!!climate warming!! We Went for a hike an hour south of here up a small mountain , nearly froze, it was lucky I always keep extra jumpers in the car, ended up wearing three. Its mid summer and the max for the day was 14C AH, we have had floods a late start to summer and now it turns out to be a cold one.
