The Pursuit of Evil

It’s been a long time since I last posted.  Far longer than I realised.  It came as quite a shock when I saw that my last post was dated 11th May 2024! 

 

So, why no posts and why post now? 

 

OK, 2nd question 1st.  I got messages over Christmas from IRO and Mark Morin which was very kind of them and it was clear that my modelling son IRO was missing his modelling dad.  Rather than keep him crying and blabbering on again and again I thought I’d try and put a post out if only to keep him quiet!😉

 

1st question 2nd.  Why no posts? 

 

Where to start?  Lets begin with the hand.

 

 

On the left is my left hand.  Perfectly straight.  It’s a nice hand.  The problem is I’m not left handed.  On the right is my right hand.  Not a nice hand.  The problem is I’m right handed! 

 

It’s a condition called Dupuytren’s Contracture, known to some as Viking Finger.  Genetically passed down from generation to generation it’s a mutation designed to hold a club or similar weapon to aid the protagonist in the pursuit raping and pillaging.  Essentially the finger(s) bend into the palm and you cannot straighten them.  Will it get worse?  I don’t know.  Can it be painful?  In my case yes.  Can it be operated on?  Yes.  The NHS will operate but not until such times as the fingers have completely folded over.  You’d think by then it would be harder to deal with.  Bazaar.  At some point I might have to get things sorted privately but that would make my hand useless for a considerable time and right now there is to much going on so it isn’t an option.

 

There is good news.  It doesn’t stop me from painting or playing golf.  Golf is far easier, you don’t grip clubs very long before striking the ball, returning the club to the bag and moving on to the next shot.  Painting is a different story.  An hour or so and it becomes an issue.  I have never been a fast painter but now I’m snail like.  I’m happy with the quality of my work but not with how long it takes to do.  The issue, aside from the cramp I get holding a brush, is the loss of momentum.  Sometimes, more often than not in fact, I simply can’t be arsed to get things out and get started.  That said I’ve still done a fair bit over the past 20 months, just not published anything.

 

So why have you not published anything TIM?  Two reasons. 

 

Firstly, I ran out of space and have yet to decide whether or not to delete more images or get suckered in to a further upgrade. 

 

Secondly, I fell out of love big time with WordPress when they changed the format.  You wouldn’t believe how difficult I’ve found it trying to create this post.  There is an argument that the more I post the more I’ll get used to it but this is countered by the fact that I’m a grumpy old bastard and when I fucking hate something I fukcing hate it and that’s all there is to it.  However, I shall try to persevere with the blog and further posts but am promising nothing.  You may well have to wait another couple of years for my next publication.

  1. Hope your hand gets sorted quickly, I know with the problems I’ve been having with my own put a real dampener on what I was able to do last year.

    Wonderful looking vignette, all the pieces work well in their respective positions and help tell the story.

  4. It’s great to see you posting again man, I really like this Diorama has a very DnD feel of the 3 people hunting the vampire.
    Sorry to hear about the hand, but on the plus side at least its got an epic sounding name for the affliction.

  5. What a needy son that IRO is! 😀 The hand and image storage issues both sound like a real pain and I’m sorry you have to deal with them. You could try and reduce the size of old images (depending on how big they are) but that is very tedious work and not something many people would want to spend their time doing.

    Its really nice to see some new work from you and this is a lovely diorama at that. I like how there are things to visually take in from different angles. That is always nice when you can pull that off in a dio!

Good to see you post, Dave, and seeing that vignette it’s been worth the wait as far as I’m concerned! 🙂 Here’s hoping you can get to a point with your hand that you can live with, with or without surgery! And we need to hang on to our grumpy old bastards to maintain a balance in the UK population – I’m pretty sure that category of person is greatly under-represented among the people who arrive via Border Force vessels (if WordPress doesn’t delete that comment I don’t mind if you do)!

  7. I don’t think you realise how happy you’ve made me today. Was feeling a little flat for various reasons but you and your grumpiness and this post have cheered me up a lot. That being said it’s not nice, obviously, to read about your Viking hand. Im guessing you’ve done or are doing all this but heat, massage and stretches are good for Dupuytren’s Contracture. I love the vignette and I’m glad you’re able to still paint minis despite it being a lot slower. WP has always been clunky and a little annoying, even with their upgrades, but for me it’s worth the hassle to have it as an outlet but also to be inspired by all the work the mini creators are doing.

  8. All hail the return of the master champion of multiple modeling shows! Very happy to see you return buddy. And while I hate that you aresuffering, you can at least still golf (which I appreciate though plenty of suffering there as you know – but that’s by choice, right!). The diorama is superb, the snow, the vines, the staircase are all just so well done and like IRO said it also made my day. Did you sculpt the staircase? Well done!

    As far as Dupuytren’s, I know here in the US Xiaflex is used to treat it, but apparently its not in the UK for financial reasons. Not sure if the NIH wouldn’t pay or what, but the manufacturer doesn’t sell it over there. Maybe that’s incentive enough for a US trip for you?
