TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 71)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks mini is another Hasslefree miniature.  This one goes by the name “Shamanic Boudi”.

I apologise for the photo’s.  I am far from pleased with them.  Done in to much of a rush in order to get this post out.  That said I could have taken my time and they probably wouldn’t have been much better!  For some reason I just couldn’t seem to get everything in focus as I would like.

I used some Green Stuff World acrylic to create a water effect base and although it looks decent enough looked down upon it looks poor side ways on.  This really hasn’t helped with the photo’s at all and something I will take on board when I re-do them and, as and when, I use the stuff again.

Everything I Touch Turns To Gold!

Have you ever had one of those weeks?  No neither have I.  In fact this last week pretty much everything I touched turned to shit.

So what went wrong TIM?

Nothing major, just all sorts of small irritating bits, one thing after another, enough to wear you down.  My mum always says bad things come in three’s.  She’s right, the current count stands at 33.

On the positive front my mood got so bad She Who Must Be Obeyed stopped talking to me.  Maybe things are on the up and I’ve turned a corner.

Next week will be better

Poll Result

Thanks to all of you who kindly took the trouble to answer my recent question about Work In Progress posts.  The majority it seems like to see the builds as they progress although one or two others prefer the wow factor (always assuming there is one!) of seeing the completed diorama first.

It seems the real challenge is trying to keep each post interesting and, if possible, try to hold something back so that the completed model still comes as a bit of a surprise.  Not entirely sure how I am going to manage that but I will give it a good try.

As I mentioned at the time this is all to do with gearing up to start a couple of slightly larger dioramas, something I haven’t done for a while now.  Slowly I am getting there in terms of getting the bits I need and hopefully it wont be too long now before things get started.  My available time though is also competing with a great many outdoor jobs and a room which She Who Must Be Obeyed (yes she’s still around) keeps on about being decorated.  I wouldn’t mind but I told her quite clearly that when I say I will do something I will do it.  OK so it was more that four months ago when she first mentioned it but compared to how long her headaches last it’s a drop in the ocean.

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Do The Strand” by Roxy Music.  One of my favourite bands and one I don’t listen enough to these days.  Still, with the onset of winter and the expectation of wet days for the next 6 months there should be plenty of time to put that right!

This week TIM has been watching …

“Man On A Ledge”.  An OK film and nothing more as far as I am concerned.  Films which don’t take themselves too seriously, for example Bond movies, can stretch the bounds of reality and I am fine with that but this on was a bit to fanciful for me.

  1. great post as usual, as far as the ‘big reveal’ goes, just focus on each little bit individually and dont show anymore than that, it like watching a gardening program showing parts of a garden than what its like when its all done..

  2. Great work on Boudi, she’s one of my favourite Hasslefree models (I actually just picked up the Jaguar version for one of my Necromunda gangs). Enjoyed the girl with tinnitus – when people find out I’m dyslexic I like to tell them I’m a fully paid-up member of DNA (the National Dyslexics’ Association). 😀

  3. Nice mini! 🙂 Very “earthy” as no doubt a shaman should be! My wife likes that mini as well (that’s quite a compliment, believe me)! And, unfortunately at the moment, shit weeks seem to be in vogue, but here’s hoping for a good week for you! 🙂

  4. Great work on the model Tim, with some water effects, a layer of gloss varnish can solve the misting, but do try it on a scrap piece first as not all water effects are the same.

  5. I do like the model a lot, and that had a hell of a lot of detail to do. You knocked it out of the park as usual (that’s a baseball reference sorry). I gotta say I liked the water, so if there was an issue I missed it. Sorry you’re having a few issues, we’ve all been there. And will again. I live by a simple set of rules that help me. 1. Try not to sweat the small shit. 2. Remember most everything is small shit.

As for Roxy Music, brilliant, on my iTunes and played often.

Good luck with the upcoming dioramas. Maybe take the striptease approach. That could work for the dioramas too! 😜

  6. The model looks great TIM, any idea why the acrylic water effect is not as you wanted on the sides? I’ve thought about using these in the past but always been a bit scared to try. And now you have had trouble with it I’m more scared.

    1. Some previous ones worked out fine but I added some snow effects to this one and I think it clouded it to much. I think I was to heavy handed with it and then made it worse trying to clear some of it. A lesson learnt when combining the two materials but don’t let that put you off as otherwise I have found it to be fine. 🙂

  7. Your latest work looks great! I like the natural colors you used and she is an interesting sculpt. You could say she is fantasy (that’s probably what I’d wager) but she could be post-apocalypse or maybe even historical if you wanted. Whatever the genre, she looks great.

As far as the WIP posts go, you could always show off parts as they finish so that we only get glimpses of what the overall diorama might look like or what different parts are. I think about these things too and have similar dilemmas so I found this part easy to relate to! 🙂

I hope that things get better for you as well!

  8. She’s looks really good. The sculpt reminds me of Warhammer Albion or Woodelves, in which she would fit in perfectly as well. Especially like how you did the bone. All in all you did her justice.
I think the base is already very good, I especially like that little creek-part where you even put in the typical bedding with the little stones and rocks.
Music choice is a nice classic again.
Speaking of a non-stellar week, it wasn’t very particularily well her as well, always too dark to find the mood and even the chance to do stuff. Botched a face I have stripped two times by now and will retry some time. But not sublime-times are a good indicator, that there will be good times as well. 😉

  9. I think the photos are good mate. What a great sculpt and very well done on the base my friend. Looks cool. As long as you’re not at a point where you’re literally touching shit things will get better. 😉 I think all your posts are interesting and I think you’ll make the WIP posts interesting too. Your audience is a bunch of geeks who love models, building models, painting models and talking about models so how can you go wrong hehe. We will love it.
