Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

This week we have another double whammy, two more Dixon ACW confederates. I don’t typically batch paint but right now it is proving the only way to get a few figures done while trying to strike a balance with the other projects I have on the go. In truth I cannot say I am enjoying it. I wouldn’t say I am cutting corners but I do like to work on a figure which I think has character and take a little more time to enjoy the process. Come the New Year I will assess the situation and decide what to do and how to go about it.

Cars
A week or so ago I stumbled across an article that said the best scale cars for 28mm figures is 1:43. The idea of doing a model featuring a car in some way or another appeals to me so I took a look on Ebay to see what I could pick up that was cheap and suitable for a future experiment. I decided I would go for the classic VW Beatle for no reason whatsoever.
I searched and found two options both die cast and starting at the princely sum of £0.99 plus postage. When I looked at the descriptions I noticed one of the two was a limited edition (one of about 400 I think it said). The other one had front doors which opened. Given that I will probably trash the car it didn’t sit well destroying the limited edition one and besides I thought the opening doors might prove more useful. I placed my bid and two days later won the auction and completed the purchase.
All being well it will be with me next week and then I can see how it stacks up against a 28mm figure.

Imperial Rebel Ork Podcast
On Saturday just gone I had the great pleasure of being interviewed by none other than IRO himself. If you are not familiar with luke’s Podcast I would thoroughly recommend that you listen. Personaly I never miss an episode although I may give episode 45 a wide berth as I cannot stand to listen to the sound of my own voice. I’m told She Must Be Obeyed can’t stand to listen to my voice either which goes aalong way to explaining why she ignores me!
I love IRO’s easy style, no doubt influenced by his years in Australia, and I really enjoyed our Podcast chat after which we talked for a good while afterwards. Hopefully, although not for the Podcast because there are so many far more interesting people for him to interview, we will get to have another chat at some point. Who knows, maybe one day the bastard will buy his old hobby dad a beer or two!

Give Me Five
This week I thought I would go with the best ever film sequels (doesn’t have to be the second film but must be part of the same franchise). As a general rule sequels are usually poor and leave a lot to be desired but sometimes they work. Here are my top five that managed to be the equal of the first or better. In no particular order:
- Terminator 2 – Judgement Day
- The Godfather Part 2
- Aliens
- The Dark Knight
- The Good The Bad and The Ugly (third film of the dollar trilogy)

This week TIM has been listening to …
“The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You” by Bryan Adams. Try as I might I have never been able to stop She Who Must Be Obeyed singing this to me. Believe that and you will believe anything!
—000—
This week TIM has been watching …
“Red 2” starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins. I assume there is also a “Red 1” but if there is I have never seen it. If I had then I may well have not bothered with “Red 2”. As films go it was OK. Deliberately over the top and to be fair it had a very good cast. The trouble is I think I have grown tired of these types of films of late and much prefer a more realistic yarn.

Great minis mate – steady on though, you’re turning into an army painter!! 🤣
Oh, and I know you don’t dig Star Wars mate, but come on… Ep.V Empire Strikes Back must surly be on any sensible ‘best sequels’ list?! 🥺

Yes an army painter, that is a worry, I’d better stop and soon! I know it is heresy but I have never seen Start Wars so I could hardly include them. The key word of course is “sensible”! 🙂

Whaaaaat? Wow, we really could have been life long mates but this new information has made me really question your ethics and morals. Haha

My son has all the films but I have never gotten round to watching them, one day I will. If only we had a lockdown …

The figures look great TIM, good that you’ve felt up to painting something. Have ordered cars off ebay before, but the scale they listed was wrong and the vehicle was way too small, hopefully yours will come through in the right scale.
Film sequels Aliens and T2 definitely, not sure on the other 3 .
R.E.D. is a film adaptation of a graphic novel series, it stand’s for Retired Extremely Dangerous, can see you not enjoying the second one if you haven’t seen the first, which gives a lot of the background on the characters and their psyche.
Haven’t had chance to listen to IRO’s podcast yet, but can’t wait to have a listen.

Haha, thought you might! Hope it wasn’t to boring. I must say IRO is a great chap.

Thanks for that Dave about the cars. I have ordered one which set me back all of 99p. It will come in handy even if it doesn’t prove completely suitable. If it is no good then I reckon I will be in for one of your resin ones. As for RED it sounds like I ought to give the first one a go, at least I will then be in a better position to judge.

Thourghley enjoyed the podcast as always, and I really enjoy the interviews he does gives a real insight into peoples hobby journeys.
Good the car was relatively cheap, the one that failed for me went to my youngest son to play with, so wasn’t a total loss, as he enjoyed it.

I like the minis! 🙂 A lot of nice shading on the clothing! I’m confused now, because I always thought The Good The Bad and The Ugly came before a Fistful of Dollars for some reason! Once again I’m stumped on the music and film stuff and I never watch podcasts, although I’d have to agree with Aliens as a pretty decent sequel!

A Fist Full Of Dollars was the first film and came out in 1964, followed by For A Few Dollars more in 1965 and The Good The Bad and The Ugly in 1966. As for films and music we are going to get you out more by getting you in to watch more stuff!

Well, I’ve learnt something there, so it’s been worth it, thanks Dave! 🙂 I maybe do need to listen to my music and watch a few more films I think – not really a hardship!

Nice figures as always, great character faces. Haven’t had chance to listen to the podcast yet, will do at the weekend, love the cartoon, and five films….
Aliens
Predator 2 (controversial but I do like the second one more)
Godzilla, king of the monsters (I have high hopes for Godzilla vs Kong too)
Dalek: Invasion of earth 2150 AD
The Empire strikes back
Cheers Roger.

Actually, Roger, I’m with you on Predator 2! 🙂 I’d rate it as good as the original!

Agreed, the characters in it were a lot deeper than in the original

Cheers Roger. I think there are a few films there to add to my watch list. 🙂

Never been keen on film sequels at the best of times….

Next thing we know, you’ll be starting a Space Marine army (or more likely, the steampunk dwarves in Warhammer)! All kidding aside, the two soldiers look great and while many sacrifice quality for speed when batch painting, I think they’re up to your usual excellent standard! 🙂
I listened to the podcast and thought you and IRO did a great job. It was interesting to listen to and you did a great job sharing some hobby wisdom too. I had a good laugh at a couple parts too, especially the idea that women are seeking out nerdy miniature painters now 😀
For movies that are better than the first, I’d give a nod to Avengers Infinity War, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Dark Knight. I think all three of those are not first in the series but are the best in their respective series in my humble opinion.

One day I would quite like to do a space marine, not sure about an army though! Glad you enjoyed the podcast. It was a fun thing to do and IRO is a cool guy. Some good fim choices there. 🙂

Nice work on these Johnny Rebs. Lots of character brought out by your brush. I too hate batch painting to a degree but I more or less mix it up – that is to say if I have a common color I’ll do that and then come back to individualize each figure. Then again, as a gamer I must paint a lot of figs for a project and that saves some time if I batch certain basic colors. Loved the Pooh joke, and Piglet might have ended up sounding like Ned Beatty in Deliverance. Again, great job on the podcast brother.

Thanks Mark, glad you like the figures as I have a few more to do before moving on, probably to cowboys so not a dramatic change of direction!

Grrrr my first comment didn’t load… Anyway, love the figure man, especially the officer with the Sabre. Thanks for the shoutout. A friend of mine listened and she thought we must of spoken before because it sounded like we’d known each other for years which, technically, we have hehe. I’m loving the top five thing. 1. Aliens. 2. Dawn of the dead (2004) which is a remake of the original one (1978) which is a sequel to Night of the living dead. Haha have I lost you? 3. Terminator 2 (but I do prefer 1). 4. Toy Story 3. 5 Mad Max Fury Road. I’m breaking the rules but I have to include Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi too. A show I wanted to recommend to you is called Gangs Of London. Absolutely brilliant. Probably my favourite show for 2020. It’s on “Stan” here in Australia.

If she’s nice I’ll have to come and visit. 😉 Glad you like Give Me Five but I might have to upgrade it to seven just for you. Will check out Gangs of London and see if I can get it over here.

Oh nice! I need to catch up on his podcasts at some point. Might have to wait till we get back to the commute though, as that is usually my best time listening to podcasts. I’ve tried while I’m painting, and it’s too hard for me.
Nice work on the minis, and I feel your batch work pain. I have a lot of Blood Bowl teams left, but they can start to suck the energy out of me. So part of me wants to take a break and part of me wants to paint more,
lol!
Sounds like you have a lot going on right now, hopefully it gets sorted and you’re enjoying it regardless! Seasons greetings if I don’t hear from ya!

Glad you like the minis and good luck with your own production line! Things are starting to settle down a bit but I won’t say that to loud for fear of jinxing it! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and here is hoping for a far better New Year. 🙂
