TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 84)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks figure sees a return to Knuckleduster and a cowboy I very, very slowly painted between Christmas and the New Year.  I was very sluggish over the festive period and barley painted at all but bit by bit this one some how came together.  Nothing to do with the figure just down to me in a mood where between eating and drinking I simply could not be asked to pick up a brush, well not for long at any rate.

The figure goes by the name of “Big Bob” and is one of the six figures in the Bad Guys Faction pack.  Wherever I can I am trying to introduce some freehand painting on my miniatures.  Cowboys offer little opportunity to my equally limited imagination so striped trousers nearly always stand a chance of being done and so it was on this occasion too.

Fembruary challenge

Until IRO mentioned it recently I had forgotten about the Fembruary challenge run by Alex over at the leadbaloony.   I have participated the last couple of years and plan to do so again but having forgotten to put such a key event in my diary I am reminded of the need to purchase a figure.  Unfortunately I am at that age that if I don’t write it down I forget things.  The bigger problem is that I am also of the age that if I do remember to write things down I invariably forget what it was I intend to make a note of and, even more relevantly, where I put the note!

The ageing process is such fun.

The Makings of a Plan?

Having made a slow start to the year I decided I ought to at least have the outline of a plan.  Nothing to rigid (what would be the point?), just enough to have some focus.  Dio-Bolical Monday takes care or itself at the moment and following that up with the Wizard Tower will keep me amused for a good many weeks.  I also have five more Knuckleduster cowboys to do from the “Bad Guys” faction for Christmas, although one of the figures is badly cast so I might not end up doing that one.

The other thing grabbing my attention right now is the apocalypse.  I really fancy doing more on that genre and I recently placed an order for a shed load of zombies.  More on that once the order arrives and I have had a chance to review what I have bought.  I also need to review the format or the blog.  No rush on that, not least of all because I have no alternative ideas just now but I need to consider my commitment to it in terms of three posts a week and how to breath more life into it for my benefit as much as anything.  Any ideas on that score would be greatly appreciated.

As plans go it’s a start but it’s pretty vague and very fluid.

Give Me Five

I can cook but I don’t.   She Who Must Be Obeyed does the cooking in our house and the arrangement suits me just fine but for one minor thing.  Without fail she asks every few days what I would like for dinner in the days ahead so she can do the food shopping.  In itself that is not the problem.  The problem is she moans at cooking the same stuff week in week out.  To be fair the menu is not that repetitive but her moaning is.  So, this week I thought you could help me out.  Listed below are 5 of my favourite dinners.  Your job is to identify some of yours so that I can appear to be creative when she asks me later.  If that works then we might move on to puddings!

  1. Steak and chips (with mushrooms, peas and onion rings)
  2. Spaghetti Bolognese (with loads of Parmesan cheese and garlic bread)
  3. Homemade Pizza with loads of Chorizo
  4. Chicken Kiev
  5. Sunday Roast (Lamb, Beef or Pork)

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Common People” by Pulp.  I do love this song and its increase in tempo part way through.  Jarvis Cocker’s lyrics are pretty cool too.

This week TIM has been watching …

“The Rhythm Section” starring Blake Lively and Jude Law.  One of those films where the trailer was better than the film.  Watchable but no classic.  I’ve also just realised there is no vowel in the word Rhythm.

  1. I like Big Bob, he looks surly but genuine. The stripes are very well done. I’m wondering if you could turn or convert the badly cast figure into a casualty OR a zombie? 😉 Speaking of zombies I’d be very excited to see you paint a horde of them mate. My too five dinners would be thus: 1. Pork roast with roasted pumpkin, potatoes PLuS Yorkshire pudding (nice and dense too). 2. Full English breakfast with one extra thing Avocado mmm. 3. Seafood banquet with every edible fish known to man please. 4. Pancakes with butter and maple syrup. 5. Butter Chicken curry (no rice) but four to five serves of Garlic Naan bread. Now I know there’s a couple of breakfasts in there but do I care??? No. I eat cornflakes at 2am and leftover pizza at 8am haha.

    1. Agree Alex but SWMBO doesn’t eat curry and although I love fish and chips supermarket stuff is crap and we don’t have a decent chippy near by. Hopefully it wont be to long before we can get to the beach again and then I will hit the chip shop big time! 🤗

  2. Great work on the model TIM, the base ties to the model really well.
Don’t think my back could cope with the party down that aisle ! LOL
5 meals 1. Szechuan chilli beef with fried rice
2 homemade lasagne ( wife puts extra cheese in the sauce, and a mix of cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan on top)
3 Chicken Jalfrezi with pilau rice and naan bread
4 Chilli con Carne with rice
5 Roast dinner ( normally beef now)

  3. As always beautiful stipes mate, and a lovely mini too.

Great joke would be followed by the announcement “Clean up on aisle 15!”

    Top 5 dinners…

Macaroni Cheese (my wife’s a veggi and this is her speciality)
Homity Pie (By the Hairy Bikers, again veggi but sooo good)
Stir fry love me a bit of Chinese!
Roast lamb (you either love it or hate it, it seems)
Fried Breakfast, with Black and white pudding!

If you have Amazon Prime, i saw a good film the other morning, “Julia X” strange thing, not what it seems, but did enjoy it. Also the Roku channel (which is a free app) has a good one too “Alien Trespass” , good take on a 50’s Sci/Fi movie but new.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Roast lamb is a favourite and I will add stir fry to the list for sure. Can’t beat a full English and I do love black pudding. Will check out your film choices. For some reason Julia X rings a bell but don’t think I have seen it. 😊

  4. I agree with the others, nicely painted and the stripes on the trousers are well done indeed. I also thought the miserable, little plant was a nice touch too for a hint of arid, Old West landscape one often sees in westerns.

    Some of my favorite meals:

    1. Grilled ribeye steak with partially melted bleu cheese, maple dill carrots and baby potatoes.
    2. Fish and Chips of course! 🙂
    3. Grilled atlantic salmon, grilled asparagus, and rice pilaf.
    4. Pork chops baked with stuffing on top of them, salad
    5. Lobster Thermidor (or just lobster), corn bread, coleslaw
    6. (Free Bonus Meal): Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans with slivered almonds

So far as plant-based stuff goes, I made a Moroccan stew that was pretty good the other day. Went good with Basmati rice:

  5. That’s dreadful that SWMBO won’t allow you to cook, you need to stand up to her before it’s too late. It’s the thin end of the wedge mate, you let her get away with this and soon she won’t let you do the washing up or the housework either.

Pity she doesn’t like curry either, she’d not survive long round my house. I’m enjoying all these suggestions though I’m not sure I could pick 5 favourite meals. I’ve got a hankering for roast chicken just now, that’s always a good one. Or some poached fish, like a big side of salmon with a little bit of chilli on it? Brown trout (wrap it in a bit of tinfoil and bung it under the grill)? Steak pie and chips (in a pub preferably, with a pint or two of a proper dark beer – what my mate Richard would call “a farty old man beer”). Full English (with the works; sausage, bacon, eggs, black pudding , hash browns. Not sure what Luke is doing putting an avocado in it but fair play to him, they must be good healthy folk out there!). I seem to have gone very carnivorous with this list, spending a day out in the cold will do that to you though, usually I’m mostly vegetarian but spend a few hours trudging through the snow and I’m ready to eat the first animal daft enough to come near me. 😀

Anyway, hope you get a decent meal at the end of this, great work on Big Bob (especially his trousers) and I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with those zombies.

    1. You’re so right mate. The more I think about it the more I think that 40+ years ago I rushed into our relationship. Sadly we don’t get our time again so let that be a lesson to you and all other youngsters out there. Some nice food suggestions and I do like a farty old man beer or two as well. Fortunatly I will now be able to give SWMBO an extensive list of ideas which will keep her quiet for a while and should allow me to get on with some priority painting. Of course she is a women so it won’t work out that way will it? The irony of that is I need to paint a kick ass female for Alex’s Fembruary challenge. Might do a little diorama of SWMBO in the kitchen. 😉

  6. The freehand was perfect on this guy and I really like the shade of yellow on the shirt too. This cowboy is eye-catching (as weird as that is to say) and he’s one of my favorite Western minis you’ve done. I like the sound of you painting up some zombies. I like the idea of you doing a diorama with them even better 😉

I’m a vegetarian so SWMBO is going to have to really push those cooking skills for this list. I do cheat and get most of these from restaurants but I’ve tried to make a couple at home too so it is doable!

1.) Saag Paneer with Garlic Naan
2.) Spicy Basil Fried Rice with Tofu but substitute with your meat of choice
3.) Anything Ethiopian food is awesome but I like the spicy lentils whose name is escaping me at the moment. Injera, the bread you eat the food with is soooo good too.
4.) Falafel Wraps preferably with hummus and all the Greek fixin’s
5.) A high quality hamburger (or veggie burger in my case) and fries. I’m crazy and like barbecue sauce to dip my fries in, though good seasoned fries are awesome on their own.

    1. Glad you like the mini mate and I am intrigued by your food suggestions. They all sound great and as someone who eats almost anything they are all things I’d like to try for sure. Where I live though will be a challenge. We don’t even have a shop let a lone an Ethiopian restaurant. The joys of living in a city, I remember it well. A trip to London is so on the cards when the restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to travel once again. 🙂

      1. London would be an ideal place to give Ethiopian food a shot, I’d say. Don’t be put off by eating with your hands either. I think some people are but its actually fun and a different way of doing things 🙂

  7. The freehand on the trousers is so well done – you are definitely pushing yourself in that direction as you said before. Sorry it’s been tough for you but it sounds like you’re rounding the bend. As far as my favorite dinners: 1 Boiled New England Lobster 2. Steamed Clams 3. #1 and #2 together 4. sushi 5. Thanksgiving turkey. My wife is a chef so I get quite spoiled.

  8. great mini mate! the best breakfast I had was an Arbroath smokie I had on our last trip,I have to say I don’ even like fish at the best of times but thankfully the young Scottish lass convinced to have a go and thank the gods she did it was so good !

      1. It is similar to them but far better and only available there , the wife failed to try them thinking she would get them latter in our trip around Scotland but everywhere we went the said , oh no you can only get them there 🤔, worth looking into my friend 🤓
