TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 100)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

I’ve just realised this is my 100th Miniatures & Musings post.  Some how it has just crept up on me, if I had been more with it I would have tried to present a better figure to mark the occasion.  As it is this week, and I think I will be saying this for some considerable time to come, we have the next figure in my army.

This Baron’s War figure is one of the four figures which appears in the “Foot Knights Pack 2”.  As much as possible I want to paint the shields with authentic heraldry, something which I have done here.  The chap in question is one Henry de Percy.

More on the project below.

Well It Made Me Laugh

The Knights On TIM’s Modelling Table

The feedback I received when I announced my army project gave me much food for thought and over the last week or so I have made some decisions.  Of course these will inevitably change!

First up my intention is to just let this army evolve naturally.  As some have said, let it grow organically.  I shall work my way through the 90 or more figures that I have flitting from pack to pack as takes my fancy and if more figures are released purchase those as I please.

Secondly, I want my knights and figures to be authentic for the period.  For the knights this particularly applies to the shields where the heraldry needs to align to a true knight.  I don’t know how easy that will be but I will do more research and see where we go from there.

Thirdly I have consider how big I want this army to be.  From a gaming perspective you have given me some great numbers and should I ever sell this lot then such information will be valuable but I am not a gamer … yet!  I say not yet only because one day I will be to old to paint so may be that’s when I’ll look at taking up that side of the hobby.  My aim for a 100 figures is ambitious I know which is why my new target of 200 or more is even more crazy.  I want the end result to blow my mind and any one else’s if that’s possible.  For all the bravado I’ll probably call it a day after 25 or so but for now it is a very serious intention.  This after all is a long term project.  Well not that long, I’m getting to old for it to take that long and besides I have other stuff to do as well!

Fourthly I have settled on how the bases will be which is just as well as I have done two figures now.  There might be some slight variation but generally what you see above is pretty much what you will see most of the time.  My OCD will not allow me to deviate otherwise before I know it I will have two armies on the go!

I still need to think about the idea of a story line, an idea which I like but is somewhat alien to me.  I also need to think how I am going to present these figures on mass in a display.  A mat isn’t good enough and with the figures being individually based it wont be a diorama.  The idea of tiles is something I think I shall start looking at and they will be easier to store.

All in all plenty to do and plenty more to think about as this evolves and takes over.  The good news is I haven’t got bored yet!

Give Me Five

This week I thought I would consider my top 5 sports films.  I thought this would be easy but I have left some truly excellent films out.  In no particular order:

  1. Rocky (Boxing)
  2. The Natural (Baseball)
  3. The Damned United (Football/Soccer)
  4. Chariots of Fire (Athletics)
  5. Rudy (American College Football)

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Brown Sugar” by the Rolling Stones.  Call me naive by all means but when I sing along to a song (I can already hear SWMBO saying “please don’t!”) and even when I get the lyrics right, I barely take much notice of them.  It’s all about the music, the beat, the tempo – the lyrics are just there almost in the background.  I never analyse them and of course when I was a lad we didn’t have YouTube so we sung the wrong words for years!.  This was very much the case for me with this track, one of my favorite tracks as well I might add.  I don’t listen to the radio a great deal, only when I am in the car and due to lockdown it has been a while since I’ve been any distance of note so, given the lyrics of this song, I wonder if it is even played anymore.  The track was never banned that’s for sure.

This week TIM has been watching …

“The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair”.  I read the book a good while back and loved it.  Very well written and very different too.  Twist and turns along the way made it hard to put down.  Then I discovered the book had been made into a mini series so it became a must watch bit of TV.  On balance it was a good series and kept true to the book as best I could recall but as you do when you read a book you form a mental image of the main characters and the actors cast, as good as they were, just didn’t align to my image.  Still enjoyable though.

Remember …

If you sneeze and fart at the same time your body takes a screen shot.

  1. Excellent looking knight TIM, and great research to get an actual one from history. If your struggling to find knights, you could always do a unit that’s the heraldry of your followers and commenters who know their coat of arms and give the unit a fun name.
    for your five here’s some
Longest Yard ( American Football) original or remake
    The Replacements ( American Football)
    Major League ( Baseball)
Rollerball (future sport) original or remake
    Coach Carter ( basketball)

    1. Cheers Dave. I’ve found some great heraldry images to work from so for now I think I’m sorted but doing my own thing is definitely an option too. Four of your five were on my extend list and Coach Carter was particulalry tough to leave out. The Replacements is a new one on me though so will check that out. 🙂l

  2. Another nicely done knight! 🙂 I like the joke – as per your instruction my wife and both dogs have been locked out in the back yard for 35 minutes now, so won’t be long before I’ve a got some evidence against which the theory can be tested!

  3. Looking good Dave, I am looking forward to see the army coming together. I made my own heraldry (well my fantasy version) when I did knights with the schools, basically black and red with a white Northumbrian boar on it… it appears in my 10mm Pendraken army. My own has boats on it, I kept the original in peace or war motto though. Oh I don’t have a garage so I locked Esther and the dog in a stable.. the dog won and Esther want’s your address 🥴

    1. Dear follower thank you for your comment. I am currenty out of the country and will not be returning to my home address until all wife and dog experiments have been concluded and the wives have calmed down, at which point I will get back to you. 😉

  4. Congrats on 100 musings! The figure looks great, nearly on the downward slope now (well not really but it’s a start 😊).

Five sport movies (I’m not that big a fan of sporty films) but here goes….

    Mean Machine (American football)
A League of their own (Ladies Baseball)
Fighting With My Family (Wrestling, is this a sport???)
    Rollerball (Not a real sport)
Le Mans 66 (The best sport!)

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Well as they say Roger, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Only a thousand miles less one step to go then! Some good film choices there too. I did love Le Mans 66 and you’ve prompted me to watch it again. I always remember the strap line for the original James Cann Rollerball film – “In the not to distant future wars will no longer exist but there will be …. Rollerball”. Great stuff! 🙂

  5. Its always exciting to see another knight and for this one, I like the blues you chose and the cool-looking pattern on the shield. This is certainly another worthy addition to your army! I like your thought process on the army too. It all sounds great to me and I think you’ve got a winning approach to this project. Keep the knights coming!

  7. Really happy to see your Army building going so well. The research process will be rewarding in and of itself. The heraldry painting will be a lot of fun for you, I found that to be true for me when I did Aztec shields. As for the bases, having them match is critical for an Army build, and I know you will excel there. Most skirmish Wargames in 28mm benefit from some sort of under base identification and I’d suggest that if you get 100 or 200 that you’ll need some way to differentiate among that many, especially if you plan on selling them. Excel tracking is a good add too, but that’s just me. No surprise there right? And the jokes always make me smile. Congrats on the 💯 and here’s to many more musings.

    1. The army build is up and started. It’s going to be slow, very slow if for no other reason than other things are now competing for my time. It is fun though and the research is proving to be interesting. I agree with the importance of the bases and need to think about the under base identification. I do have a system in place for storeing them and identifying them but not on the figures themselves. Something else for me to think about. 🤔 Not sure what I will do when the army is finished but I don’t plan to sell any until the project is finished. 🙂

  8. 200, huh!? Well, I’m sure I will like #200 just as much as #1! These are some nice looking minis and I wish I had known about them earlier, as I enjoy the sculpts. The painting is really nice and I love the designs you’re adding to the shields. As for, sports films, I have the odd one: Baseketball. Not my usual sense of humor, but it’s just so over the top that it cracks me up. Plus it’s an excellent slap on modern Pro sports.
