Another week and once again I managed to achieve my aims. In truth I feel I could and perhaps should have done more. My enthusiasm for the project is as high as as it has been from the start but I just don’t seem to be able to shrug off the level of sluggishness that I have developed. I feel sure this has so much to do with lockdown and repetition to my daily life. If it wasn’t for sticking with the blog and trying to hit my self imposed publication days I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell you what day of the week it was.
So, how did I manage to get on?
The first image of the immediate three below is where the base was last week. Once the PVA had dried out a few more stones were added to the front area I then I started to apply filler. On this occasion I went for using DAS clay. It dries quicker, not that I was in any rush, and for what I had in mind was easier to work with and shape.
In the third photo you can see that I have started to shape the waves. A big thank you to those of you who were kind enough to share some tips and YouTube links. I have now worked out what I plan to do and will go into more detail in a future post. The shapes made so far are really only the foundations. The important thing is they are reasonably spaced out and all travelling in the same direction. I went for waves coming in from an angle as I thought it would look better on the eye. Time will tell but of course but by then it will be to late! You will also notice that in addition to the rocks some sand has also been added.

With front section looking OK it was then time to start looking at the back and sides. Plasterboard carving and stones needed to be added along with some sand and thereafter more DAS clay where applicable. The sea won’t be lapping up here so it’s just about a landscaping finish.

With the need to allow for things to dry as well as work out quite where I go from here I thought I would make a start on one of the figures. There are only going to be a couple but obviously one has to be a wizard. I settled on a little figure produced by Crooked Dice. A two part figure where the head was seperate. I decided not to assemble the two bits at this stage and made a start on painting his head.

Next week I am aiming to get some painting done on the base and maybe get the wizard fully painted so he can be put to one side for later.

Progress is progress mate, you’ll get there.

Nice. I think the waves coming in from an angle was a good call.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I think I picked up on something which said about avoiding square on whenever possible. Then again I could just be making it up!

Looking really good, do you know I would never of thought of adding the waves in Daz first then going clear over the top, but it’s bloody obvious when you think about it!!!
Cheers Roger.

Haha, you say it’s obvious Roger but it was something I’d picked up on and not something I’d worked out for myself! 🙂

Great work as always TIM, the base work is coming on leaps and bounds, and good that you found a way to do the waves that works for you. I’m guessing once you’ve finished sculpting the waves you’ll then paint them before adding the clear element ?

Yes that’s spot on Dave. The sculpted waves are pretty much as you see them now but the waves will be higher when finished. The aim this week is to get the base work all painted and after that to start painting the sea/clay before then applying the wave effects..

Looking good Dave, the waves are looking really good at the angle.

Cheers Steve. Given where you live if anyone knows anything about real waves then you are my go to man! 🙂

Looking great, and I’m glad to hear the blog is giving you some focus in these strange times.

It certainly is mate. If it wasn’t for the hobby I think I would have completely lost it by now instead of partially! 🙂

I really like your progress as usual – the waves look like they will be excellent. The wizards head and face look great – hopefully freeing you up for some freehand on the torso! Great journey continues…

Thanks as always Mark. Hopefully the waves will work out OK but it’s something new that I haven’t done before so will have to wait and see (or should that be sea?). As for the Wizard, a bit of freehand for sure. 🙂

Looking good there- like the smooth wave fors you made. The wizard’s head looks good too.
Cheers,
Pete.

Thanks Pete. The waves are smooth for now but I am hoping the sea will look a bit rougher by the time it’s finished. 🙂

This just keeps getting better and better! Was curious to know how many models you were going to include, it’s big enough that you could probably have 100s, but just the two will really emphasise the remoteness of the scene. Of course I’m very interested to know who the second figure will be…

The second figure when you see it will leave you asking “so what’s going on here then?” 🙂

I thought that might be the case, the wizard obviously goes with the tower so the narrative must hang on the second figure. Consider me intrigued!

I’ve run into the malaise you’ve described on my current project too. I wonder if there is something with bigger projects that causes it to happen too. Regardless, the basework around the tower is looking stellar. I really like the head on the wizard model too. It has a lot of character to it and I’m curious to see what the rest of it is going to look like 🙂

Thank you. Yes it is a strange phenonom but I think painters and modellers have their own equivalent to marathon runners hitting the wall and at times you just have to work through it. Of course these are odd times too. 🙂

Looks like you figured out the waves, which is good, because I was scratching my head on how to even begin to tackle something like that! Though in my mind I was thinking “crashing waves”! I’m sure you would have something for that too!
Will be interesting to see how that Wizard turns out. 🙂
