TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 95)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks miniature is surprise, surprise another Hasslefree figure and one I have done before at least once.  Taking advantage of a Hasslefree offer of 20% off over Christmas I put in a large order and included a number of figures I had done before.  Not an issue because I love painting them.  I have still to decide if this one will stay in my collection or find its way onto Ebay.  If I do end up selling it I will probably spend the money buying him again!

The Wednesday Whinge

Maybe it is only something which happens in the UK?  It has been about for a a good few years now so it’s not new either, but it does now seem to be a constant.  What am I talking about?  Resignations.

It might just be me but have you noticed that when someone does something wrong, either actually wrong of perceived as wrong in the eyes of the politically correct brigade, that there is an instant outcry from the public or the media for the individual to resign?

Now of course there are some things which warrant individuals to fall on their sword and if they fail to do so then they should rightly be pushed.  But there are many instances it seems to me where at worse all the individual needs to is apologise, learn from the incident and move on.  That or simply stick to their guns based on our (declining) freedom of speech society.

Yet another example for me of a world which continues to go from crazy to fucking mental!

Diorama Lite

The word “Lite” in respect of beer is used to typically describe a pale lager that is reduced in alcohol and calories compared to regular beers – Miller Lite, Coors Lite, etc.  It’s a diluted form of the real thing and so is Diorama Lite.

I’ve been conscious for a while that my Wizard Tower diorama is drawing to a close leaving me with the quandary of what to do next.  Ideally it would be another large diorama but space is a big problem I have to address before I can give serious consideration to doing another.  In due course I will resolve this issue but until I do get my head around it I’m looking at the idea of Diroama Lite, a series of posts of micro dioramas on bases of 40mm x 40mm or maybe smaller.

The idea is to really try to make something of the base as well as the figure(s) all within the confines of a limited space.  Will it work?  Possibly.  Will they all be a success?  Almost certainly not.  For better or worse what you can expect is probably a two part post comprising of the base build, figure paint job and the end result.

Well that’s the plan!

Give Me Five

This week and with the UK lockdown nearing an end my mind wandered off in the direction of Road Movies, films where essentially the director takes you on a journey from one place to another.  I settled on the following five.

  1. Easy Rider (1969)
  2. Thelma and Louise (1991)
  3. Into the Wild (2007)
  4. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
  5. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Galway Girl” by Ed Sheeran – I don’t always live in the musical past!  I do rather like Ed probably because he offers hope to us gingers.  I also like Saoirse Ronan who I fell in love with in the film Brooklyn and who features in this video and then there is an old girlfriend and work colleague of mine called Maureen who was born and bred in Galway and who now lives back there.

This week TIM has been watching …

“Black Books” and “Breeders”.  Two for the price of one this week thanks to Wudugast and Kuribo who a couple of weeks ago each recommended a sitcom to me.  I hadn’t heard of either (sitcom that is!) but managed to track both down and have so far watched the first couple of episodes of each.  Must say I enjoyed both very much and as a parent Breeders really struck a cord.  The good news is I still have plenty of episodes still to watch! 🤗

  1. Great joke will have to pass that one on! Sorry hate modern chart music (we have to listen to a “new music” radio station at work and its all crap), Ed Sheeron is a perfect example this tripe too I my opinion, as I said sorry.

    Five road movies…

    Identity thief
    We’re the Millers
    Damnation Alley
    Ice cold in Alex
    National Lampoons Vacation

    Cheers Roger.

  2. Ah, I’m glad you’re enjoying Black Books! 😀 I often feel that I’m some kind of strange hybrid between Bernard and Manny.

I don’t remember seeing that miniature before but I like him – looking forward to seeing him again the next time you paint him!

Diorama Lite sounds like a great idea, there’s a lot that can be done with a small space but – like a short story or a minimalist play – you’ll have to be including only the most important elements to set the scene.

Aye, the resignations thing is an odd one. Have you noticed how the phrase “the Prime Minister has said that (inset name of beleaguered MP here) has his full confidence” is always followed by the poor sod falling on their sword within hours. Whilst I’m in full agreement that people should be allowed to live and learn in any job – provided they made an honest mistake and there was no malicious intent – we do seem to be seeing something odd happening at the moment. There have been some huge scandals in both the Scottish Parliament and Westminster lately (parliament mislead, public trust eroded, crimes – allegedly – committed) and the people responsible just seem to bare-face it out. It seems like we’re at a point where if you accidently do something minor you have to lose your job, but if you deliberately do something major you get to shrug it off. Madness.

    1. Diorama Lite will prove to be a challenge I think. It might well prove to be one of those things which will take a while to get right but whatever the outcome at least I hope to have fun. 🙂 As to the Wednesday Whinge you are spot on. I guess at the end of the day it can depend a lot on how thick skinned the accused is and of course who they know to help them sweep it under the carpet. It always helps as well if a more news worthy incident just happens to keep said scanda off the front page!

  3. That is a nice sculpt and I can see why you enjoy painting him so much! I’m curious to see how your “Lite” dioramas go. I could see myself needing to do a similar thing one day honestly. I’m proper chuffed that you like Breeders as well. I think it is hilarious as a non-parent and I imagine I’d find the humor even more relatable if I decide to have children one day 😀

    1. I suspect space will determine the twist and turns you take with the hobby in years to come, it certainly has with me. As for Breeders, if really strikes a cord as a parent and is proving a great watch so cheers for pointing it out to me. 🙂

      1. I strongly agree that space will guide my hobbying quite a bit. Might have to move to the middle of nowhere and build a big house to support my space needs 😀 You’re very welcome, mate. My fiancée told me the other day that there is a second season of Breeders so I look forward to watching it.

  4. Another fine job on the Hasslefree figure. I can see why you’d want to buy him!

Diorama lite – that will be fun – and I look forward to that.

As far as the movies, well, I think I am way behind without any chance of catching up! Music, maybe…

Lastly, we don’t get resignations enough here. Even when there are multiple allegations, the solons hold onto power as long as they can. Even goes into the court system: in the halls of justice, the only justice is in the halls.

    1. Cheers Mark, glad you like the little chap. Hopefully Diorama Lite will fill a space until I can gain some more for a larger diorama. It seems politics is a strange affair where ever you are these days. Then again was it ever any different? I doubt it!

  5. Great work on this guy – and I recognised him right away – it’s based on Francis from Left 4 Dead, a zombie apocalypse videogame:
    https://left4dead.fandom.com/wiki/Francis
Not bad on a faithful likeness given you’re not familiar with the character! 😀
As for politicians falling on their swords, I wish we had more of that here as the pricks in charge seem intent on keeping their “Big Swinging Dicks Club” (their chosen name, not mine) full of sex criminals and their coverup-accomplices in charge for as long as possible while doing three fifths of fuck all federally and leaving a huge number of federal; responsilbilities to the states. Helps when the media is run by former party-mates and leash holder Rupert, I guess. I’d hope for/expect a decent rout when the next polls are up.
Huh. I think you might have touched a nerve there… 😛

    1. Cheers for that, has to be Francis for sure looking at that image. Also makes me wonder now if some of the other Hasslefree figures are similarly based on this series? If I get a chance later I’ll take a look. Haha, yea looks like a touched a nerve! To some extent that was the mischievous intention behind my Wednesday Whinges aligned to having been in lockdown for over a year! There is no doubt the world is in a fucking shitty place on so many levels and once we have seen some semblance of order post Covid it will be interesting to see what the new world order looks like. I reckon you have every chance of seeing the rout you are hoping for. 🙂

      1. I’m pretty sure he has a bunch of other L4D survivors in the range. I’d have to go through the HF catalogue to pick them out, but I’m pretty sure I even have a few of them.
