TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 96)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks miniature goes by the name of Major Hoare and he is a 28mm Hasslefree figure.  He is based on the character “Dutch” played by Arnie in the Predator movie.  Those of you who follow this blog may recall seeing a similar version which I painted for IRO at the tail end of last year.  IRO had this great idea of trading figures and by way of return I received a cracking Cowboy miniature painted by the Orc himself.  As an avid collector of Hasslefree figures (really you hadn’t noticed?) it was inevitable that I need to add this classic to my collection.

The figure itself was pretty straight forward helped no end by the fact that I had performed a dummy run on the one for IRO.  If anything though I think the one I sent to him actually turned out better.  As with my previous effort I decided to stay as true as possible to the clothes as worn in the film.  Not spot on by any means but hopefully a good representation at the very least.  A bit of vegetation for the jungle vibe and voila!  I’ll now leave IRO to compare the two versions!

The Wednesday Whinge

This weeks whinge will most likely be the last.  On April 12th (which also happens to be my wedding anniversary) the pubs open up again.  I need to check the rules of engagement but I am hopeful that my mate John and I will be able to meet for a mid week beer once again and start to put the world to rights.  I have every confidence that you will feel the seismic waves heading your way.  With so many things to moan about the Wednesday Whinge may well make a guest appearance from time to time.  Be that as it may this week I thought I’d take on the minor subject of Global Warming!

Let me start by saying I think Global Warming is for real.  I will also add that all the shit us humans have pumped into the atmosphere, and still are, is doing no good at all.  Neither are we helping ourselves with our destruction of nature in all its forms.  Doing stuff to remedy all this, and as soon as possible, is highly commendable morally if nothing else.  But here’s the thing for me, isn’t the planet just warming up naturally?

Now putting away my high levels of ignorance on this subject let’s just look at some simple logic.  Over thousands if not millions of years the planet has had previous ice ages.  After the first the earth warmed up a bit and then we had another.  Then it got a bit nippy again and then it warmed up again.  It’s done this a few times.  Why therefore does the earth stop evolving just because man is on the planet?  In short it doesn’t so are we therefore not simply living through the next warm period albeit one being accelerated by us humans?   I’m inclined to think so.

In the meanwhile I will continue to do my bit for the environment, reduce my carbon foot print and stay living several metres above sea level while I see out my days and keep my fingers crossed for my kids.

Give Me Five

The recent return of “Line of Duty” (series 6) got me thinking about my top five UK TV police/detective dramas.  Over the years there have been some great ones but these proved the most unmissable for me both now and in there day.  In no particular order:

  1. Line of Duty
  2. Prime Suspect
  3. Unforgotten
  4. Luther
  5. The Professionals

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Diamond Dogs” by David Bowie and the title track from another great album of his.  The more I think about it the more I think there is a little diorama to be had inspired by this song title. 🤔

This week TIM has been watching …

Divergent” starring Shailene Woodley who I had never heard of but thought was quite hot and Theo James who I recognised but couldn’t initially place what I had seen him in and then remembered it was the first Inbetweeners movie.  Apparently this is the first part of a trilogy.  Having enjoyed this one I will pick up on the next two in due course.

  1. Fantastic Dutch mate. I’d say he is 99% the same as the one you so generously did for me BUT 1. Mine is better because it’s mine hahaha. 2. I’d say mine has a slightly lighter skin tone, unless it’s just the photography? Very nice work though. I’d love to see you paint all the characters from the movie including the Predator. Yayyy for the pubs. Pub culture here isn’t quite the same as it is in England. I have fond memories of going to pub on a Sunday with the family. Dad would get me some crisps and a coke but he’d also let me Hoover off the froth from the top of his beer, much to his and his friends enjoyment haha. Ahhh the good old days when underage drinking was encouraged haha. My top five: 1. Luther. (Thanks to you. 2. The Bill (the early years). 3. Taggart. 4. The thin blue line. That was a comedy but mehhh. I can’t think of a 5th so I’ll just chuck Morse in there because Dad loved it.

    1. Yea, you definitely got the better one, just goes to show what I,guy I am! 😉 I did look for the other characters and found another one that Hasslefree do. Getting the Preditor would be pretty cool, must have a look for one and see what is out there. The British Pub is an institution but not one that is easily replicated elsewhere in the world. I guess that puts the onus on you to come here and I’ll visit you for a BBQ. 🤗 Oh my mate, unless counting is too much of a challenge for you then you are seriously missing some great TV shows that are out there. Get the brushes out and the laptop on mate! 🙂

  2. Love the painting, but his hand is just so large, it looks out of scale, lol! As to “global warming” I 100% agree with you, most of this warming is natural cycle, but, what we do as humans environmentally effects us locally. So if you dump shit into a river, it’s not going to effect the weather across the globe, but it may poison ecosystem downstream. It’s why I recycle and compost as much as possible, try to walk when I can instead of driving, and generally do what’s best as much as I can within my own power.

    1. Cheers Eric and I see what you mean about the hand. I didn’t pick up on it earlier but now my eye goes to it straight away! As for Global Warming, where ever the truth ultimately lies the simple fact is a greater respect for the evironment is a must. All we can do mate is our best and encourage others to do the same. World leaders pulling their weight would do no harm either! 🙂

  3. Great work on Dutch again TIM, the camo work is excellent.
Following your train of thought, that means we are about to have another ice age then, although we passed the predicted event back in 1999 when they expected the next polar shift, with the ice age following the year after.

    1. Well if the people who made that prediction call the tunes on the weather forecast then I can’t say I am at all surprised they got it wrong. Whatever the future I’m guessing I won’t be around to witness it but if by some chance I am then I’ve got Bermuda shorts and and a sheepskin coat so will adapt to whatever comes my way. 🙂

  4. Its nice to see The Govinator again, as he was once known! I grew up watching several of his movies and while I don’t understand why he was popular, every generation makes its fair share of dubious decisions, I reckon! 😉 In terms of the mini, I think he came out really nicely and I like the basework you did. The foliage looks very jungle-like, as it should!

I enjoyed this week’s whinge and couldn’t agree more with what you’re saying. I moved to Chicago almost three years ago and other than one truly awful winter, I feel like I’m seeing global warming happening here. The winters have been suspiciously tame. Al the while, the amount and intensity of natural disasters across the US and the world just seem to increase each year. It is a sad and disturbing state of affairs and I fear it will only get worse unless we change the path we’re on.

In happier news, I hope you enjoy going to the pub in the near future! 🙂

    1. Thanks and glad you like the mini. Enjoyed some of the Arnie movies but you can only get so far playing every character with limited dialogue. As for oglobal warming, there is freakish weather going on all over the world with records being broken all the time it seems to me. I think we have to do what we can and should be anyway but if it is nature doing its thing then it will continue to do so no matter what I reckon. As for the pub, I’ll be sure to enjoy it. 🤗
