This weeks miniature is the first in what is sure to become a very, very recurring feature of my Wednesday posts and maybe some Saturday ones too, a figure painted and based which goes towards my medieval army project.  All the figures are from the Footsore Barons War range and this is one of the four figures which comprises the pack titled “Foot Knights 1”.

The paint job was pretty straight forward and as I have no plans to use decals and have never had success with masking tape all my work on shields will be freehand.  The aim will be to try and get more adventurous but I will be driven by heraldry as I learn a bit more about it.  As much as possible I want my knights to be authentic.  As far as basing goes, whilst there may be some slight variation this will be the standard.

More on the project below but in terms of completed minis we’re up and running.

The Knights On TIM’s Modelling Table

As headings go it’s not a great play on “The Knights of the Round Table” but it was the best I could come up with.  So, an update on the project.

Firstly a big thank you to those of you who very kindly provided encouragement for this project along with words of advice and valuable details on figures and numbers for an army.  I have taken it all on board but for now I thought I would focus just on painting, specifically for now foot figures.  I have every intention of doing mounted Knights but that will come later.  Whether I do the whole Baron’s War range of mounted figures remains to be seen.  I’ll see how the range grows because it appears to be expanding quite fast, by which I mean quicker than I can paint.  For now though and with Footsore offering a 20% discount when you spend over a hundred pounds I thought I would take advantage of the offer while it it lasted.  After almost no deliberation whatsoever I piled straight in and pretty much bought the lot.

As things currently stand I have purchased packs of Levy’s, Crossbowmen, Spearmen, Bannermen and Musicians, Bowmen, numerous Knights and various Character figures giving around 90 figures to paint.  Whether they all make it in to my army remains to be seen.  Although I will make the effort to clean and prime all the figures in one hit the painting will not be in batches.  I don’t enjoy production line painting, regardless of time efficiency, so I fully expect to adopt a random approach.

Give Me Five

Not sure what inspired me this week, nothing I can recall watching or listening to for sure, but I decided to try listing my top five movie villains.  Not an easy choice but after some deliberation I settled, in no particular order, on the following:

  1. Darth Vader (Star Wars Franchise)
  2. The Joker (Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight)
  3. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs)
  4. Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes, Schindlers List)
  5. Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, Harry Potter Franchise)

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix.  In response to my Give Me Five music intros in TIM’s Miniatures & Musings No: 97 my brother kindly emailed a couple of links to some classic tracks of which this was one.  Well worth a listen to on a high volume and after a few beers.

“Red Joan” starring Judi Dench.  A good film “based” on a true story with an interesting justification for being a spy and giving away official secrets.

  1. What a great start. A solid knight on foot, colours are “argent cross azure”, and I like the gambeson peeking from beneath his surcoat. I also like the simple yet well presented base.

    You are soon going to have a well painted small army, or a great collection, however the fancy evolves.

    1. Thank you. The figures themselves are really quite nice so I think I will enjoy painting them which is just as well as I have a few to do! The aim is to be authentic with colour schemes but I need to do more research on this. 🙂

  2. Excellent looking knight TIM, the heraldry looks crisp, and well in keeping with history. Many of the lower ranked knights had simple symbols and blue was a common colour as they had easy access to woad. The more well to do knights, would use red and yellow( gold) as the elements to dye these had to be imported. Only the most affluent knights could afford creatures as they’re symbols.

    1. Cheers Dave and thanks for some more valuable and interesting historical insights. I’ve been looking at Google which has been useful but I think I really need to get hold of a good book. Something for me to look into. As an aside have you heard from Roger lately, he seems to have gone quiet?

  6. Decent villains but how could you leave off Sir Alan the Rickman in his infamous role in Die Hard?!

    Hard to believe you’re starting an army. What’s next, Space Marines?! There’s no stopping you! I hope these are going into a diorama. Don’t know that I’ve ever seen anyone do something like a big battle diorama. That could be quite cool.

    I might just have a Knight of my own to show off next week!

    1. Rickman is a good shout I must say, he was good too in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves as well. Not sure about space marines, we’ll see how the knights go first! It won’t be a diorama, I just don’t have the space unfortunately. Looking forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve!

      1. I liked Rickman’s performances, but the writing of his character was just so perfect in Die Hard and so different from how villains usually are.
        Well, my mini will definitely pale in comparison! You’ve done a number of nice knights, and scored some sweet minis for them.

  7. The freehand looks very sharp on this knight and I like the blue and white a scheme. Definitely a promising start with this project. You got quite a haul of minis to paint in the future as well which hopefully provides you hours of fun. As you know, I’ll be excited to see more and you’ll be able to do lots of group shots which I generally hound our good mate, Azazel for! You’ll probably get the same treatment once you get a few more done 🙂

    As for top villains, your list is great. I’d probably throw Thanos from the Avengers on my list. I think the villains in Tombstone deserve a shout too. I’m sure I could come up with more but those are two movies that I’ve seen recently that I thought were really good.

    Jack Palance as Voltan in Hawk the Slayer
    Richard Kiel as Jaws in the James Bond movies
    Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless
    Cristopher Lee in just about anything

  11. Woah Dave! HaHA that is an amazing number of figures to paint! that would equate to me painting ten thousand!!! Well if any one can you can. I spoke to my mate and explained the difficulty of shipping Dio’s and he understood,but he still sulked! suggested I get the figures and copy yours!!!!!!I replied Sorry cant paint and it’s not what we do!! Thanks any way mate!
