After last weeks rather dull post I am rather hoping this one will prove a little more interesting. If not then I apologise for misleading you last week.
I suspect some of you are familiar with the Frazetta Death Dealer painting. Here is an image of it.
A pretty cool painting by any standards in my opinion. Thanks to a news letter email I received from North Star Miniatures I picked up on their promotion of this Lucid Eye figure. At £18.00 it was far from cheap but I fell in love with it and decided I wanted to have it, and besides She Who Must Be Obeyed fell for the line that it only cost a fiver!
I’d like to think the base and my figure painting did an amazing sculpt justice but painting black and pretty much only black is always a challenge. Still it is done now and you can make up your own minds.
Images below.
TIM
It definitely has that dark brooding “death” mood, you did a great job with the colouring, more so when given such a limited palette.

Great work TIM, the model and base work so well together, and a great representation of a Death Dealer

Cheers Dave. It’s an excellent sculpt I must say. Just how anyone can do these things is beyond me.

…Aaaand it’s as good as I hoped – very nice work mate, I wouldn’t want to see him riding over the hill towards me.

That is some very well executed black (see what I did there😀). That is very nice, you have got different shades / textures of black there somehow so well done.

Superb painting.
Love the way the base works to let the figure shine.
Cheers

This came out well, mate! Painting dark and grim colors is harder than it looks and I think you captured the mood of Frazetta’s art really well. I wouldn’t mind seeing you tackle some more fantasy sculpts in the future, if you’re up for it of course!

Hey Dave you really have grasped the nettle on this one, like Kuribo says i have found that when I tried to paint dark grim colours they never turn out well, so full marks on this one mate!

Deep black is so hard to pull off, and you did here indeed. I was unaware of Frazetta, every time I see this painting I think of Molly Hatchet (southern rock band in the late 70s and 80s) https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a9/Molly_Hatchet_-_Molly_Hatchet.jpg/220px-Molly_Hatchet_-_Molly_Hatchet.jpg&imgrefurl=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Hatchet_%28album%29&docid=UeoGL9W9pjolQM&tbnid=GvbpLJZG-X6d4M&vet=1&w=220&h=220&hl=en&source=sh/x/im

Thanks Mark. As for Molly Hatchet they really did use the Frazetta painting didn’t they.

Nice work, and not easy to pull off with all the black. I might have gone a little brown on the horse, like in the painting…but I think it probably worked better as you have done, as it ties everything closer together. Looks like it was also hard to get a good angle on the mini, but the one shot of him head on is pretty nice. I remember seeing the Frazetta covers on the Death Dealer books, when I was a young teen. I was pretty stunned. Not sure I ever read the books, but I wouldn’t mind painting up a figure of him someday. Would be very cool, to get several classical fantasy hero minis to paint up!

Thanks you. It is a lot of black and it wasn’t easy to photographer (for me) either but it is a great sculpt and one to add to your Christmas list I reckon. 🙂

Since I’m not good with horses yet, I’ll keep an eye out for an unmounted figure! 😉
