Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

This weeks miniature is yet again another figure double, I’m on a roll! In fairness these are a lot easier to churn out than the knights. The lack of a shield keeps these figures much more simple. It’s not that they are that much quicker to paint because they have faces to be done but I don’t have to spend time wondering what heraldry to do. These two Baron’s War figures are from the “Spearmen No: 1” pack and I’m hoping I’ll get the other two done next week. If I do, and if I manage to remember, I’ll also do a group photo of the four of them. I also need to get my head around a larger group shot too, in particular what to use as a base and a backdrop.

Give Me Five
I’m not sure just how many films feature in this genre compared to topics of previous weeks but I decided to consider my top five musical bio films. I still found myself leaving out a couple of excellent movies though! In no particular order I listed the following five.
- Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
- The Glenn Miller Story
- Nowhere Boy (John Lennon)
- The Buddy Holly Story
- Backbeat (The Beatles)

Model Club
After what seems like forever the Plymouth Model Club will be meeting for the first time next Monday. Lockdown restrictions have been lifted to allow for this to happen although common sense precautions will be in place. It will feel strange meeting up after such a long time and it will be interesting to see what members return. Who knows, membership may even increase due to the growing interest in the hobby as a result of Covid. It’s even starting to look like some shows will now take place too. I’ll let you know how it goes.

This week TIM has been listening to …
“Go Solo” by Tom Rosenthal. My brother put me on to this guy a little while ago and slowly his music is growing on me. I think it helps that this track has been taken by Renault for a UK TV advert and as such it’s exposure has grown. A nice slow track with touching lyrics. I can be sentimental at times!

This week TIM has been watching …
“The Inbetweeners Movie”. Like Marmite there is no half way house with The Inbetweeners, you either love it or you hate. Personally I love it. Watching series one to three of The Inbetweeners, along with the first movie, followed by Ricky Gervais in the “The Office” would, together, pretty much make up up 80% of my life before I retired. Sad but true.

Remember …
If you see someone wearing camouflage make sure to walk straight into them to show its working.

TIM
Great work on the two spearmen TIM, I hope you remember some group shots, and agree photographing multiple models is a pain.

Thanks Dave. My biggest problem with multiple models is getting stuff in focus. I must put myself out to learn more but then I’d paint less! Oh, the problems of a hobbiest! 😂

I was enjoying the look of your spearmen, then was distracted by the spear of the primate and really lost my train of complimentary thoughts while laughing. hahaha…poor guy.

Nice work on the spearmen and glad to hear the club are getting back together, it’s about time we were able to get back to living our lives. 🙂

Cheers mate. I think it is going to feel a bit strange but it will be another hurdle jumped on the way to normality. 🤞

Nice minis! 🙂 However, I think you’re putting off the day when you have to paint . . . CAVALRY! I’m not a biopic film person, never watched The Office, but The Inbetweeners are brilliant!

Thanks John. The mounted Knights are demanding and do little to clear the pile quickly but there is some truth in me putting off doing them! That said I remain determined to get them all done and I have plans now for another one, it’s the other 14 I now have to think about!

Thanks Pete. I’m not sure what liking the Inbetweeners says about us but it really is a funny series!

I like how the spear is so straight. No, not the monkey! A fun post though I’m trying to purge the monkey image from my cerebrum…

Haha, it’s not the kind of image you want to be stuck with is it?!

All I’m hearing is Peter Gabriel’s “Shock the Monkey” too

Both the spearmen look great and I think the sculpts are very nice. A lot of times spearmen look too static but these look like they’re ready to poke a hole in something or someone!
I watched The Inbetweeners when I was dating an ex who really liked raunchy humor and whom I have since tried to forget about since it ended poorly. I don’t know if it is a result of that or what, but I have complicated feelings about the show. It is both funny and too much all at once in my book. Having said, your description of life before you retired did give me a chuckle 😀

The range of sculpts is very well done I must say, plenty of variety. As for the Inbetweeners, probably not most ladies cup of tea to be fare, then there is the US/Brit translation which doesn’t always work well either. 🙂

Great work on the spearmen, yes you do need to do a group shot, and yes they are a pain in the bum to do, so sorry 😀.
Talking about Monkeys, my son came down stair the other day (a rare occurrence in itself) and on seeing a Monkey on TV stated “Did you know Monkeys don’t masturbate in the wild?”
“No” I replied, “But then neither do I”.
He went back upstairs on that.
Cheers Roger.

Very nice. I really like the way you’ve painted the red tabard on the first spearman.
