As pleased as I was last week at having completed another mounted knight I came down to earth when I realised it was only the fifth one and I still had seven more to do. I’m more than happy painting them but with hindsight I should have mixed things up more along the way. That would have provided greater variety for me as well as for you dear reader. Still we live and learn and I am where I am as far as this project goes. The bottom line is these knights have to be finished before I can do more base work or I’ll box myself in and give myself all sorts of problems.
On the positive side of things I told myself that two more mounted knights painted would see over half of them done which would be motivational so this week I dug in and got another one completed. I also made the decision that no more work would be done on the Barn until I was over half way with the mounted knights.
This weeks offering is a simple affair. As you may recall from previous posts only four of the mounted knights have Comparisons to paint and as I have now done three of those it should be quicker for me to do most of the rest. You never know I might even get two done if I have a good week. Alas this wasn’t a good week so you’ve only got one to look at!
Nothing particulalry special about this one but he should fit in nicely with the others. The good news is I’m now half way!

Looking good Dave … I reckon we have all done the ‘almost finished’ thing where we smile in a satisfied way and then turn around and see a box we missed. It’s like when I wash the dishes… I finish, put the kettle on for a cup of tea, turn around and find two plates, three cups and a dirty pan that have appeared on the table behind me. I reckon your next Knight should be maroon and black with a silver boar on the beast… its my heraldic persona I did for my Knight I used when I went into schools.😉

Excellent news that you’ve reached the half way mark TIM, this one looks great as always and nice to see one without the Comparison should add a nice variation between them and also allow some interesting horse markings or colours. I wont suggest mt coat of arms as it’s a pain to paint ( I tried for a chess set for my parents, didn’t get far ! LOL)

Thanks John. The colour was a brown mix with the dominant brown being Burnt Umber. I ought to be more like Mark Morin when it comes to recoding my mixes for future use but I do try to deliberately avoid doing so at times. This way I can ensure, as in this case, that no two horses should look the same. Well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

That all makes sense! 🙂 Since I only paint 20mm figures I don’t need a lot of shading and highlights, so I found simple Vallejo Flat Brown ideal for horses, although it took me years of mixing colours before I found this one straight out of a dropper bottle)!

Its always good to hit a benchmark on a painting project and I’m enjoying seeing each knight as you get around to painting them. It won’t be too long and you’ll be wowing us with a finished diorama, I reckon! 🙂

You are quite right. Benchmarks help maintain the motivation on a big project and I feel like I’m not that far away from completion now. That said there is still much to be done.

Thank you. My problem on reflection is I should have mixed things up a bit and not left myself with all the knights to do at once. I’m on the home straight now though which should help to keep me fully focused. 🙂

Beautiful Dave! my colours perfectly and they go well with the brown John mentioned, Oh I dont think it would be wise to try and emulate our Mark in regards to his amazing listing of the paints he uses, If I tried I only get one post done a year!!
