OMG! – A 28mm Diorama (Part 5 – Final Diorama)

Well finally I got this diorama finished, I hope you didn’t get bored with the WIP posts.  By coincidence today would have been Salute 2020 at the Excel centre in London.  Unfortunatley it had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak and since then the venue has been converted into a 4,000 bed Nightingale emergency hospital.  Who would have thought that a few weeks ago!

Back to the diorama.

The final figure got painted and positioned.  Another fine figure from Hasslefree which goes by the name of “Jholkar of Bolverk”.  Other than a little tidying up and some little bits of vegetation the model was complete.

Below are images of the completed diorama.  At the end I have also included an image of the model in its early stages where I was playing around with the pieces and how it would in theory go together.  I thought it might be of interest to see how the basic design played out.

This model is destined for Telford unless I come up with something better in the meanwhile or the show does not go ahead in light of the prevailing circumstances.  Also I haven’t as yet come up with a better title than “Oh My God!” If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Now it is time to move on to something new.  Maybe I will give some of the ideas you guys came up with a go at some point in the future too.

Here’s hoping you like the end result.  The images aren’t the greatest but unfortunatley rain prevented me taking some outside pictures.

TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 45)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

A little bit deep and meaningful this week.  “Billie the Hunted” is a Hasslefree figure of a scared girl hugging her rag doll.  In these troubled times when our kids are understandably worried, spare a thought for Billie.

Coronavirus – Self Isolation Week 4

Day 22 – Am I the only one who’s body clock is completely fucked right now?  Pre-Cornonavirus lock down there were occasional times when I didn’t know what day of the week it was.  An age thing.  These days I do not know what day of the week it is, what time of day it is or even if it is morning or night.  My internal intuition is now completely screwed.  Even meal times follow no pattern.  This morning I ate cauliflower cheese.

Day 23 – Thanks to Amazon two tins of spray matt varnish arrived today leaving only three orders outstanding.  Well not entirely true as I placed an order with Dixon Miniatures for a few ACW figures but as I only did that yesterday it doesn’t really count.

Day 24 – In theory my family and I have 60 more days of self isolation to go.  Government advice may change in that time of course but not for all I suspect and not those who are or have a family member in the high risk group.  Time will tell but for now we have settled into a routine which although it has its low points seems to be working.

Day 25 – Today is my wedding anniversay, thirty eight years and counting.  I can’t see via Google what the right gift is for 38 years of marriage but I’m pretty sure it isn’t Covid-19!  Now I don’t typically plan ahead and buy things like anniversay and birthday cards that far in advance but for once I did and She Who Must Be Obeyed didn’t.  I’m going to enjoy today!

Day 26 – There is a guy in my village who I cannot stand.  He is an idiot and I call him Mad Martin.  We have never seen eye to eye on anything but at times like these I have come to realise that life is to short, it is time to move on and to have no regrets.  I have decided that when we bump into each other once lockdown is over I’m going to tell him to fuck off.

Day 27 – Pension payday today and I feel like the guy who lost a pound and found a penny.  On the down side my share prices have dropped significantly and no dividends are being paid but on the up side I spent almost nothing of my net monthly income as a consequence of having nowhere to go.  If the coronavirus lockdown continues for the next two years (heaven forbid) then I reckon I could be in with half a chance of balancing the books.

Day 28 – Now I have never been to prison and have no plans to do so.  The thought of picking up dropped soap in the communal shower fills me with dread.  However, I reckon the highlight of the average prisoners day is when the food tray is passed through the cell door hatch.  And so it is with us when the home delivery arrives from the baker or the butcher or the grocer. 🤗

To WIP Post Or Not To WIP Post?

With my diroama OMG! almost complete it is time to start working on a new mini project the working title of which is “Covid 19: Lockdown Breakout”, catchy and rather topical I thought.  I have no idea how long it will take, two or three posts at best I reckon.  The question is do I put out a WIP post(s) before or after completion?

Something for me to mull over but feel free to share your opinion if you have one as I would welcome your thoughts.  I’m also considering adding a little story line narrative.

Decisions, decisions!

Feeling rebelious so felt like a bit of punk.  Even went out twice for exercise as neither of the kids could be arsed to walk the dog last evening.

This week TIM has been watching…

“Remember the Titans” starring Denzil Washington.

A few years old now but a great film all the same.  Can’t say I know anything whatsoever about American Football.  Probably the most bazaar game ever invented from what I can make out but fortunatley you don’t need to have any understanding of the game to enjoy the film.

TIM’s Memory Monday (No: 13)

At the time when I did this post back in July 2017 I didn’t think I would get quite so involved in WW1 themed figures and little dioramas.  I went on to produce my own timeline all of which will be revealed in future Memory Monday posts.  I also didn’t appreciate how much I would deviate from the Old West genre which had pretty much dominated my work up to that point.  How times change!

—000—

28mm WW1 Diorama (No: 1)

Although most of my models follow an “Old West” theme I do occasionally deviate from the genre.  Sometimes I do so because a model or figure comes along which simply takes my fancy but sometimes there are other reasons for doing so which is the case in this instance.  I shall explain.

Modelling for many of us who are interested in the hobby is often a solitary affair; a great thing to do on a wet and rainy day, of which there are far too many in England. Whilst I am happy to spend hours indulging in my pastime I am if I am being honest more extrovert than introvert and decided I need to engage more with the wider community.  To this end I made the decision to a) create a blog and b) find a nearby modelling club and join it.

The blog is doing OK despite my lack of computer know how and I am aware it takes a while to get these things up and running.  I’m also aware that this is a niche area so I’m not anticipating a life style change anytime soon!  I do now have a couple of followers, you know who you are and I am both flattered and grateful for your comments, thank you. So, objective number 1 is in hand.

So on to objective number 2 and its relevance to the diorama featured in this post. I managed to track down a club in Plymouth and a few months ago went along to my my first meeting.  They meet a couple of times a month with the second meeting being a club competition evening.  There are about 19 members, most of whom I have now met and they are a friendly bunch.  Modelling is a diverse subject made up of various genre’s many of which are represented by the club members.  That said few of the members are figure painters so my work has brought something new to the club.

At this point I should perhaps explain to those who do not know that Plymouth is a Naval and Royal Marine city and I think this has influenced many of the clubs modellers who specialise is WW1 and WW2 military planes, ships and vehicles (I on the other hand am a Londoner a who wanted to be a Cowboy!)  The club also holds its own annual Modelling Show in the City and for 2018 they aim to hold the event on the same day that the City holds its Armed Services Day.  As next year will be the hundredth anniversary of the last year of the Great War 1914 – 1918 the club thought it would be a nice idea if everyone produced a model with a WW1 theme.

The images of the diorama below represent my contribution to next years model show.  Military uniforms are not my speciality so apologise in advance for any inaccuracies.  The model was fun to do but I don’t think the era will dominate my future work. Although having said that the idea of doing more diverse subjects has captured my imagination.

A final few comments on the club I joined.  Firstly, I would encourage anyone who is not in a club to join one.  It’s great fun engaging with fellow enthusiasts even if you aren’t into the same genre.  Most, if not all, modelling skills and techniques are transferable and so much more can be learnt in this environment. Secondly, assuming this to be true of most clubs, there is a wider audience via the attendance and participation at other shows.

I went to my first show a few weeks ago and took along some of my own work to display.  To be honest I was a little afraid of what people might think of my work but having had a lot of positive feedback at club nights, and competition nights in particular, I went along with a positive out look.  It turned out to be a great day, met and spoke with a lot of new people, picked up some great tips and received a few accolades along the way.  One chap even took photo’s at the event and put them onto a YouTube video.  If anyone wants to check it out then search for “Helicopter Museum Model Show 2017” there is a part 1 (which features 7 images of my models which blew me away) and part 2.

Images of the diorama – in progress to completion – below, hope you like it.

OMG! – A 28mm Diorama (Part 4)

This week has all been about getting one figure painted.  The figure as you will now be able to work out is the OMG element of the diroama.  Sorry it isn’t a dragon or the other things some of you guessed at and I hope you aren’t too disappointed.  Well done to Bogenwald though, he rightly guessed a giant following last weeks post.

The figure in question is from Reaper and is a Hill Giant which goes by the name of “Krug”.  He is a very big chap, solid metal and weighing a ton.  Well OK not a ton but very heavy for a figure.  So heavy that fixing his arms and head which were all seperate castings into place proved a challenge.  Fortunately I go there in the end and once fully assembled the painting could begin.  Given the weight, holding the “miniature” and keeping it steady proved difficult at times and painting in instalments became necessary.

Below are various photos of the figure including a couple where he has been positioned on the base and some of the ground work has been done.  This coming week will see the fifth and final figure painted and positioned.  All being well there will then only be little bit to tidy up so I should get it completed.  With the diorama complete you will hopefully be able to get the perspective on this chap relative to the others.

Coronavirus – Self Isolation Week 3

Day 15 – One of those days where I found myself trying to gain some perspective on the present circumstances and what the potential future will look like.  I suspect I will have more days like this one.   Concluded that the world I knew as of a few weeks ago is now completely fucked.  Promised myself that tomorrow I will wear my positive hat.

Day 16 – Today’s highlight was putting out the rubbish.  Ordinarily I wouldn’t give the matter a second thought but it occurred to me that I now get to go out as much as the rubbish does.  Think I might have to make this my dressing up day from now on.

Day 17 – Crooked Dice order arrived today but still no sign of four outstanding orders.  Disappointed but not surprised.  Will have to result to some weird colour combinations if my paint orders don’t arrive soon.  Think I will place another Crooked Dice order too.

Day 18 – In an effort to get me motivated and out of the house She Who Must Be Obeyed pointed out that the weather was ideal for getting on with those outside jobs.  I pointed out that I cannot get the bloody materials for doing any of them!  Hooray! More time for painting and modelling.

Day 19 – Started to wonder how long people will be prepared to stay cooped up for before they say “Fuck this I’ll take my chances”.  Not sure it did me much good but if nothing else my thoughts sparked an idea or two for a couple of apocalypse dioramas.

Day 20 – Despite walking the dog the best part of 5 miles each day I seem to find myself more and more physically drained.  Cannot claim to be ill but equally am a far cry from feeling 100%.  Indicative of the crazy times we now find ourselves living in?  Will go with the answer yes.

Day 21 – Three weeks of isolation under the belt and only nine to go assuming the UK government plan stays on course.  This week hasn’t been a good one.  SWMBO decided to go through her wardrobe.  She proudly announced “Look, after 25 years this still fits!”.  Pointing out that the said garment was a scarf didn’t go down well.

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Ca Plane Pour Moi” by Plastic Bertrand.

This is what three weeks of isolation has done to me!  Seriously worried where the next nine weeks may lead.

TIM’s Memory Monday (No: 12)

This at the time, and probably still the case now, was my most complex diorama build.  Being my sixth building project I had learnt a great deal and tried to incorporate just about everything I had learned up to this point.  It remains a personal favorite, has won a couple of awards and often receives nice comments when taken to display at shows.  Looking at it again now makes me think that one day I may take on a similar project.

28mm Building Project No: 6 – Wells Fargo Way Station

Few images of the Old West more classical than a Wells Fargo Overland Stagecoach and Dixon Miniatures produce a fantastic kit.  Having constructed one of these kits for my brother’s birthday some while ago I always had it in mind to build another for myself, it was always just a matter of time.

I decided the stagecoach would feature in a diorama and chose to depict a Way Station where passengers leave and join the stage and where drivers and horses rest up a while. Space as ever was a constraint but I wanted this to be a diorama of firsts, reflecting if you will my growing confidence at scratch building.

I had never built a wire tree before, made a wire fence, constructed my own internal furniture or completely constructed my own building with a removable roof but that was about to change!

Following a video guide I found on YouTube the first thing I built was the wire tree.  I wont go into further detail on this because I covered the process in two recent blog posts. YouTube was also the provider for how to make a wire fence.  The fence posts themselves were match sticks each drilled with three holes.  The wire was real wire 0.5mm thick.  A length of about 12 inches/30cm was folded back on itself  and then the two separate ends were clamped together tightly (a vice is good for this).  I used a nail placed at the looped end to pull the wire tight  and then twisted and twisted and twisted … you get the idea … and twisted until the wire became taught. Simple but very effective.  The wire was then threaded through the holes on the fence posts.

Anyone who has followed my earlier posts may recognize that the building looks pretty similar to those produced by Sarissa Precision which I have used in the past. There is a reason for this.  When you by one of their kits they come in a couple of MDF sheets (more for bigger buildings) of about A4 size.  Each sheet has the various parts which make up the building which once pressed out leaves the complete outline of that part which can then be used as a perfect template for creating your own scratch building.  In my opinion Sarrisa Precision make quality products at reasonable prices, their range has grown and grown too.  If you think you might use one of their designs more than once, or there is a design that you could easily modify, then buying one and keeping the empty sheets for future builds is a cheap option.

So back to the building.  Using the template of a previously purchased building I set about constructing the various parts using my now tried and tested method of foam board, coffee stirrers, cardboard, match sticks (extra long matches for the veranda posts) and PVA glue.  The lean-to on the side of the building was my own design addition.

For this building I planned for the roof to be removed in order to look inside.  With this in mind it was necessary to clad the inside of the building with coffee stirrers too and to make frames to cover the “glazed” windows and add wooden shutters as well. The window shutters and the door were given “Z” frames for appearance and practical build reasons.  The door handle was made by drilling a whole in the door and inserting a small piece of a cocktail stick.

All of the furniture was scratch built.  The bed was made using a combination of match sticks and coffee stirrers (as was the wooden log box) and a dried out wet wipe dipped in diluted PVA was used to make and mold into shape the bed pillow and blanket.  The table, chair and dresser were all made of various combinations of match sticks, coffee stirrers, cocktail sticks and other bits I found lying around.

The wood stove was my favorite build.  It was made using a piece of round wooden dowel with a round metal washer as the base.  Two metal washers, one larger than the other, were stuck together to make the top of the stove along with a small piece of rounded card to close the washer whole.  Another small piece of card was used to create some relief on the dowel to make a door and a pin head was used to make the door handle.  A wooden BBQ skewer was used to create the stove-pipe and a piece of tubular plastic taken from one of the protective covers which comes with good brushes was used to create the joint.  It was then all undercoated before being painted black and weathered.

The coat hooks were made using the ends of cocktail sticks, the hat was taken from an unwanted figure and the rope was made from some thin string.  The broom was made from a thinned match stick and the hair of an old brush.

Outside, the barrels were some spares I had in my “bit box” and the log pile was simply made from various left overs made smaller with a modelling knife.  If like my brother you are wondering why there aren’t any tools lying about then I will give you the answer I gave him, “they’re all neatly inside the lean-to!”.  The water trough was made of coffee stirrers, filled with Woodland Scenics Realistic Water and the pump was made from wooden skewers with a paper clip handle.

The figures are all once again from Dixon Miniatures with no alterations made.  The stagecoach does not come with chains and harnessing so this was all made from scratch.  The chain was purchased from Hobby Craft and cut to length.  At each end a pin shortened in length was attached and a hole drilled in each horse to accommodate it when stuck together.

Assembly required a lot of thought.  With so many pieces it would have been easy to box myself in and have very little room, if any, to access and paint as required. fortunately I got there in the end!

Images of the completed diorama appear below.

OMG! – A 28mm Diorama (Part 3)

Since my last post, OMG Part 2, I have managed to more or less complete the waterfall and most of the base work.  Once all the figures have been put in place some minor additional ground work will need to be done, including some vegetation to add a little bit of colour, but that will come later.

The first two pictures below show the waterfall still drying out.  You can now see that the top part has gone clear while the bottom part still has a little way to go.  I have also added some mist/water spray to the bottom of the fall.  This was done using some type of fabric stuffing that She Who Must Be Obeyed had laying around.  The bridge has still not been glued down yet as access to the fall is still required.

361F4E40-C811-4227-8746-AB156FFDDEADB5DB0FF3-69B7-42C1-B567-E275629C5373

With the bridge taken out again and the waterfall dry it was time to take some white paint and dry brush some highlights to simulate the cascade and hopefully bring the fall to life.

62E96E33-8669-4BEB-B30A-EBCB5C6C27C5

Time now to get the tree leaves on and start work on painting the figures.  Until they are done, one in particular, it wont be possible to do all the further work on the base.

Next we have the first of three figures.  In total there will be five.  The eyes on these figures were very important.  They needed to appear to be looking up for reasons which will become obvious either in the next part or when the diorma is complete.  The plastic bases are temporary and purely for keeping the figures upright while taking photos.  All three of these figures are from Hasslefree.  This figure goes by the name of “Jakevim the Swine”.

67F31DB5-C97A-4DA3-9E0D-B9F01BB8D6F0

Here we have all three in their final positions.  The final layer of ground work on this side of the diorama has now been completed and a splash of colour added with a few plants.  I decided to go with more is less and chose red as I felt it stood out.

BE1E350A-B2B7-409B-9D94-FAB8CD2546A921383705-4978-442F-80B9-BA1EB9BA9C90

That’s it for this post folks.  Part 4 should see work on the fourth figure and probably the key element of the whole diorama.  At that point you will get a very clear image of just what is going on.  All being well I should be able to wrap the whole thing up in part 5.

TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 43)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This week is a bit of a cheat in that I have posted this 54mm Space Marine figure before.  So why post it again?

Well first time around I had painted the figure but not based it.  Now ordinarily I wouldn’t bother to re-post but on this occasion I thought some of you might be interested in the “pod” which I have added to the right of the figure for any space type bases you might be considering doing.  It reminded me of the pods which appeared in the film Alien.  In reality the pod is a Beech tree nut case (see final image).  I added some thistle and leaves to the inside for a bit more interest.

Maybe it is only me but I definatley think these pods have an outer space vibe.

OK it is only me!

Coronavirus – Self Isolation Week 2

Day 8 – Living in the open countryside it is possible to self isolate by going out with the dog for a long walk and meeting nobody.  Generally I walk him 4 1/2 miles in the morning.  My daughter does the same in the afternoon and my son goes out with him in the evening.  Not sure how long we can keep this up, the dog (Buddy) is knackered!

Day 9 – She Who Must Be Obeyed announced that after 8 days of confinement she had become to appreciate the little things in life.  Apparently that didn’t include my penis.

Day 10 – Ordered a car battery charger when it occurred to me the family cars will have flat batteries by the time we ae able to use them again.

Day 11 – Almost two weeks of self isolation gone and growing concerned my modelling stash wont last the twelve week duration.  Being risk adverse decided to place several orders.  It remains to be seen when they turn up.

Day 12 – Spirits are still high in the TIM houshold.  The fine weather we are having is allowing us all to be outside as well as inside.  For now it is just like being at home on holiday.  Bigger tests are yet to come.

Day 13 – Home delivery services now in full swing.  Today saw the Butcher, Baker and Green Grocer all deliver to our house.  We also managed to secure a supermarket home delivery slot for 3 weeks time!  Thank goodness for the small independents.

Day 14 – Found two islands for sale off of the north west coast of Scotland.  One is 36 acres the other 25.  For sale at £175k.  If they are still available when this is all over will give the matter of buying them some serious thought.   SWMBO saying “no way” has pretty much made my mind up!

Off The Work Bench – American Civil War 28mm Diorama

Much of which I could say about this diorama has already been covered in earlier posts under the header “On The Work Bench” so I wont bore anyone by making further reference to making the tree, the covered bridge and the small section of river.  That said more than happy to answer any questions on the subject.

The diorama itself is meant to depict confederate infantry men making way for the limber coming through and hopefully that comes across.  The figures are once again all from Dixon Miniatures and apart from adding harnessing to the horses and limber are as purchased.

Assembly on this scale and with quite a few pieces proved a little tricky but I got there in the end! Various scenic details were added, most notably the grass which was applied using a static grass applicator.
