Dio-Bolical Monday No: 19 – “The Wizard’s Tower” – Part 12 – Final

This week brings an end to the Wizard Tower diorama and the timing could not be more perfect.  Not only does today signal the end of this diorama but it is also the end of the end of lockdown and my 39th wedding anniversary.  It is also the end of Dio-Bolical Monday for the foreseeable future.  This diorama, and Fools Gold which preceded it, have both been great fun but as well as the need for a break I need to create space before I can even contemplate doing another.  Until that time does arrive I intend to replace Dio-Bolical Monday with Diorama Lite.  The first post should be next week but we will have to see.  Meanwhile back to this one.

As at last week I was left with a few things to do.  The dragon needed to be finished and was.  It was duly tidied up and whilst I can say I hated every minute I spent painting it the end result was OK.  It was then just a matter of positioning it and the second figure.  I decided to pin the dragon in such away that it can be removed if necessary.  I have also kept the tower in its sections rather than gluing it all together.  The fit is so good you cannot see the joins and it will also make transporting it that much easier too.  Picking up on several comments I also tried to inject some movement into the banner but having already stuck the banner down and put it in situ the scope to do anything was very restricted and I wasn’t about to start again.  But hey, that’s why I am The Imperfect Modeller!  So, a final few touch ups here and there and that was job done.

On to some photo’s.  The first four images show the positioning of the second figure before the dragon was added and then with the dragon in situ.  The photo’s thereafter after show the complete diorama along with various close up images.  As it was a nice day I decided to take the tower a part and go outside to take the Photo’s  Not the ideal backdrop to be fair but then again I don’t have an ocean in my back garden and I don’t have a light box the size of a marque either.  The final image is a photo of the diorama in its display case.  All in all not an easy thing to photograph, well for me at least, but hopefully you can get a feel for the finished piece.

Well folks I hope you like the end result.  Personally I have had a blast doing it.  The tower itself is an awesome piece of kit and I would recommend Table Top World buildings to anyone, they’re worth every penny.  Obviously it’s the favorite bit of the whole thing but I’d also like to give a shout out to the sea effects.  Not my idea as pointed out in earlier posts but it is simple and so cool.  Something I’d really like to do again at some point but until then that’s it.

  2. Brilliant! 🙂 Planning where the dragon and figures were all going to be at the end of it can’t have been easy, but it really looks spot on. In the outdoor light, the tower could easily be mistaken for a real structure I think! I’ve really enjoyed following this!

  3. It’s been great following this, and what an amazing result! Well done on finding a case that fits that tall wizard’s tower, it even makes the Bones dragon look small! Also, congratulations on 39 years!

    1. Thanks Dave, and thanks for following the journey too. Glad you like the end result. I think the case helps provide some perspective but finding it was easy in as much as a friend is in the business and made a bespoke one for me. 🙂

  4. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary. The completed diorama looks spectacular, and all the pieces fit together seamlessly, giving a great overall cohesion, with all the individual elements having a place but not being overshadowed by any other element

  5. Awesome build, Dude! Love the water effects, something I struggle with! I understand your issues with the dragon, Bones resins are pretty soft, however the finished miniature looks as awesome as the rest of the diorama!

    1. Cheers Eric, it was fun to do. To my surprise the water effects proved easier than I thought but I must give the credit to YouTube posts for that. If you ever want to give it a try I would recommend the video links I included in previous posts. As for Bones … ghastly stuff but all is well that ends well! 🙂

  6. This has been a real joy to watch you build, and the highlight of my Monday lunchtime break from work for a while now, so thanks for sharing!
    The finished article is absolutely grand well done sir!
    But the fit in the cabinet is a bit close is, how much clearance have you got 1cm? Was that perfect planning or a bit of luck?

    1. Cheers mate and glad you like the end result. Were you on the right track when a couple of posts back you had an inkling of what might be to come? As for the case a friend of mine who owns Just Bases made a bespoke case for me so down to planning rather than luck but I was worried I’d given him the right measurements. Fortunately I had … just! 🙂

      1. That makes sense with the case, I was wondering how you had done it!
        I was completely off a few posts back, I had not expected a dragon to turn up. My assumption at the time was that the sword armed chap would be running up the steps, hence the pose which to me looked like the legs could be on 2 steps at once, towards the wizard higher up possibly throwing fireballs or the like at him.

  8. That’s brilliant! And congrats on the wedding anniversary.

    The model is fantastic, I particular like the waves sweeping onto the rocks, and the look of “ohhh shit” on the fighters face as the dragon towers over him. Amazing work.

      1. They just wouldn’t come up on the app, but I opened it on the web version and they worked fine… it is AWESOMENESS. I really love it Dave. The colours are just so spot on and the blue dragon works so well to add that splash of colour…

  12. This is an absolute masterpiece mate. Sorry I’ve missed some of the posts on this one. I’ll have to catch up on the backlog at some point. That dragon is perfect. Nice positioning and I love that you went for blue as it’s not an overly typical colour for dragons but it works perfectly. The blue is a really is a nice bold contrast to the rest of the diorama. The figures are brilliant and also perfectly positioned. The rocks and bricks on the tower blend really nicely and the ageing of the tower is superbly realistic. The flag is spot on. The waves are a tour de force man. Really, really impressive. The photography is really nice and good idea going outside for the bulk of the pix. The ones with the green garden in the background are my favourite. Brilliant work all round Davey, you should be super proud of this one. You never cease to amaze me mate.

Young whipper snappers such as yourself are keeping this old timer on his toes so more and more I am having to pull out the stops whenever and however I can! Time for a break now from bigger stuff and a return to little items and figures. Perhaps after the summer I’ll sink my teeth into something bigger again. 🙂

  13. Well, this has certainly been worth the wait! What an epic diorama! I’ve seen dioramas that are large and have huge model counts but the size of this one dwarfs most projects I’ve seen. Best of all, it looks fantastic and the tower and landscape are full of life and realism. Fool’s Gold was a damn good diorama but you’ve certainly outclassed it here. This is your best project yet and I hope you’ll be able to find a way to build some more bigger dioramas in the future as it is a lot of fun watching your progress.

    Also, congrats on your anniversary! I would highly recommend that you take a chance at not reaching your 40th anniversary and get another big diorama going whenever you have the idea and motivation 😉

  14. I’ve taken my time in responding to this mate – I wanted to take a good look on the pc rather than my phone. This is absolutely superb from top to bottom… everything on this is just excellent, I don’t even know where to start! Obviously the ocean is superb, the stonework is just lovely, and the figures are fab (even the Bones Dragon!!). I love all the little touches like the plants hanging from the window sills & the lichen, it’s just fantastic mate.

This is beyond gorgeous and so well-thought out. All of it screams out to be seen by as many people as possible. I hope that you can get it into competition as it will be a force to be reckoned with.   17. Hey mate I bet you wondering why I haven’t commented, its because this amazing work of art has left me paralyzed!! Bloody amazing, the sea is so well done I would never attempt to do one that’s roaring, the boys have said it all ! no wonder you need a spell.

    1. Haha, and there I was thinking you were still unpacking Pat! Glad you liked the end result mate. It was fun to do but you know all about dioramas. Nice to see it completed but then what do you do next? Many congratulations on the 36 years. As I said to SWMBO, it feels like only yesterday, if it was tomorrow I’d cancel it! 😉

  22. I love your work. Could sit here for hours scrolling through your images. Not a modeler myself by have always been fascinated by the hobby. I’m a tabletop role-playing gamer and as such there is (or was) a large crossover of enthusiasts.

    I can remember being amazed, watching someone work on an American Civil War diorama at Gen Con in the early 1980s. I also recall marveling at the entries in the annual competitions at the convention.

    Perhaps they still do it but it has been years since I’ve seen it prominently displayed. At any rate, I am glad I stumbled upon you and very much enjoy the stories that your creations tell.
