Vodellis Winterhand – Reaper

As I have mentioned in previous posts I do like figures which for me have a bit of character and to my mind at least this 28mm Reaper figure, which goes by the name of Vodellis Winterhand, has just that.  If there was an opportunity to do some freehand I couldn’t see it so in many respects it was a straight forward paint job.  None the less I was pleased with how he turned out.

In truth given the lack of empty space on my painting desk at the moment I am surprised he got painted at all.  Generally my work space is neat and tidy and free of clutter  (She Who Must Be Obeyed would argue to the contrary) but I had forgotten how much space and stuff I need out when working on dioramas, not to mention the, mess that goes with it.

Adversity was overcome in the end and images of the little chap appear below.

TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 80)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This week we have another double whammy, two more Dixon ACW confederates.  I don’t typically batch paint but right now it is proving the only way to get a few figures done while trying to strike a balance with the other projects I have on the go.  In truth I cannot say I am enjoying it.  I wouldn’t say I am cutting corners but I do like to work on a figure which I think has character and take a little more time to enjoy the process.  Come the New Year I will assess the situation and decide what to do and how to go about it.

Cars

A week or so ago I stumbled across an article that said the best scale cars for 28mm figures is 1:43.  The idea of doing a model featuring a car in some way or another appeals to me so I took a look on Ebay to see what I could pick up that was cheap and suitable for a future experiment.  I decided I would go for the classic VW Beatle for no reason whatsoever.

I searched and found two options both die cast and starting at the princely sum of £0.99 plus postage.  When I looked at the descriptions I noticed one of the two was a limited edition (one of about 400 I think it said).  The other one had front doors which opened.  Given that I will probably trash the car it didn’t sit well destroying the limited edition one and besides I thought the opening doors might prove more useful.  I placed my bid and two days later won the auction and completed the purchase.

All being well it will be with me next week and then I can see how it stacks up against a 28mm figure.

Imperial Rebel Ork Podcast

On Saturday just gone I had the great pleasure of being interviewed by none other than IRO himself.  If you are not familiar with luke’s Podcast I would thoroughly recommend that you listen.  Personaly I never miss an episode although I may give episode 45 a wide berth as I cannot stand to listen to the sound of my own voice.  I’m told She Must Be Obeyed can’t stand to listen to my voice either which goes aalong way to explaining why she ignores me!

I love IRO’s easy style, no doubt influenced by his years in Australia, and I really enjoyed our Podcast chat after which we talked for a good while afterwards.  Hopefully, although not for the Podcast because there are so many far more interesting people for him to interview, we will get to have another chat at some point.  Who knows, maybe one day the bastard will buy his old hobby dad a beer or two!

Give Me Five

This week I thought I would go with the best ever film sequels (doesn’t have to be the second film but must be part of the same franchise).  As a general rule sequels are usually poor and leave a lot to be desired but sometimes they work.  Here are my top five that managed to be the equal of the first or better.  In no particular order:

  1. Terminator 2 – Judgement Day
  2. The Godfather Part 2
  3. Aliens
  4. The Dark Knight
  5. The Good The Bad and The Ugly (third film of the dollar trilogy)

—-000—

This week TIM has been listening to …

“The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You”  by Bryan Adams.  Try as I might I have never been able to stop She Who Must Be Obeyed singing this to me.  Believe that and you will believe anything!

—000—

This week TIM has been watching …

“Red 2”  starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins.  I assume there is also  a “Red 1” but if there is I have never seen it.  If I had then I may well have not bothered with “Red 2”.  As films go it was OK.  Deliberately over the top and to be fair it had a very good cast.  The trouble is I think I have grown tired of these types of films of late and much prefer a more realistic yarn.

Dio-Bolical Monday No: 4 – “Fools Gold” – Part 3

Last weeks post ended with the image below and I said that I would explain this week why the track over hung at the front and why the carved plaster board, bottom left, hadn’t been painted.

The depth of the base this diorama will eventually be fixed to is 20cm whereas the depth of the mine entrance just up to the over hanging track is a few centimeters shorter.  When I get to start fixing things in place on the base which comes with the perspex case the front will need to be built up and brought forward at which point the track will no longer over hang.

The unpainted plaster board on the bottom left will I hope become one side of a small stream.  Until I start fixing things into place this is something I cannot deal with properly yet and only when I can will I start to think about painting.

img_0712

On to this weeks progress.

As I am not working to any kind of schedule I can’t really claim to be behind but nevertheless I had hoped to have had more done.  In fairness I achieved what I hoped to do this time last week but because I got it done quicker than anticipated I hoped to kick on a bit more.  Alas life took over and it didn’t happen.  What I did manage was to get the mine completely painted along with the track and the mine cart.  I say completely painted but in due course it will need to be blended with with the rest of the diorama and have more dry brushing done.

The mine cart comes empty so I filled it with some cat litter which once dried was painted too.  I also got a barrel done and a few scatter wooden planks although these are not stuck down yet in case I decide to place them elsewhere.  A couple of plants were added to provide a modest amount of colour t break things up a little.  I expect I will add more debris and scatter later on but until more of the overall assembly has been completed it is hard to see at this stage what is needed.  More is less springs to mind at this point.

A few images below.

img_0714img_0713img_0794img_0793

Finished for now but certainly not complete.  More work on this bit to be done but it is well on its way.

I did receive a couple of suggestions about having the mine lit up inside.  A great idea but looking closely at the stage I was at I couldn’t get my head around how to do it given what I had built so far.  In reality the mine isn’t that deep and the track turns to the right to give the illusion of depth.  What I did take from the idea though was the thought of doing a diorama at some point which was inside a mine or a cave.  I liked the idea of a dark place lit up but need to give more thought to the theme and figures.  In any event one for the future as I have other things lined up.

Next week my aim is to start painting the cottage.

Oriana, Grey Maiden – Reaper

This weeks 28mm figure is from Reaper and goes by the name of Oriana, Grey Maiden.  Despite the colour in her title I went for green as the dominant colour and in so doing ended up with a figure I really do not like.

In truth I did not like my colour choice right from the start and should have stripped it down and started over but, for no other reason than laziness, I couldn’t be arsed to do so.  Interestingly I feel the same way about another figure I have started that is sat on the side of my desk.  I’m not entirely sure why this is but I am very much inclined to blame it on Covid and the lockdown.  I’m not looking to make excuses but I have pretty much been nowhere and done nothing since early March and mentally I think it is now taking its toll.  I’m not concerned about going out just cannot be arsed to do so.  Where is there to go when everything is shut down anyway?

More and more the least little thing is now becoming an effort and I am sorry to say that I fear the same can now be said for modelling and painting.  I’m loath to take a break from painting or from the blog as I worry I wont start up again if I do.  The thing is I usually do some research and look at images of other peoples work all of which helps to determine what I do.  This however requires effort that I am not putting in and the results as far as I am concerned speak for themselves.  Hopefully the forced break induced by Christmas and family in attendance will provide the opportunity to rekindle my enthusiasm, that and the dawning of 2021.

Apologies for the miserable post!

TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 79)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks miniature is actually two figures for the price of one!  Sorting through my bits box I discovered a number of Dixon’s American Civil War Confederates which I had completely forgotten I had.  In all honesty I didn’t feel like painting them but then felt guilty and decided that I ought to make the effort to do so.   I divided them into two batches and committed myself to doing half in the coming weeks and half after a break, rewarding myself if you like.  Nothing much to say on these at all really.  Confederates provide a little more colour contrast than Unionists so I do prefer painting them.

Christmas Shopping

The pandemic has made Christmas shopping very difficult this year.  I’m stumped with what to buy She Who Must Be Obeyed and my son and daughter will not be easy either.  Then there is my mum and dad.  What do you buy an 89 and a 94 year old?  Well obviously something they can use straight away but narrowing it down doesn’t particularly solve the problem.  The thing is I really need to actually go to the shops but online shopping is going to be the order of the day.  Restrictions might be lifted but having spent so much time in lock down I’m not going to throw it all away by joining the mass hordes as they go mental shopping in the city.

There is, however, some good news.  Whilst others might have to go without or settle for what can be bought on Amazon everything I want for Christmas can be purchased online.  Such is the beauty of our hobby.

Give Me Five

Back to the movies this week and the genre is Westerns.  OK it’s and age thing on my part but it’s also my blog!  Now this was tough because there are so many classic films to chose from.  I could have made this a top thirty list and still left loads out.  In the end I went for the films I can watch again and again.  It was still tough but my top five in no particular order are:

  1. Once Upon A Time In the West
  2. Shane
  3. Tombstone
  4. The Outlaw Josey Wales
  5. Dances With Wolves

—000—

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Only You” by Yazoo with Alison Moyet.  Before there was Adele there was Alison Moyet.  I hadn’t listened to her in a long time but I recently watched the final episode of The Office starring Ricky Gervais which featured this track and was then reminded that it was time I dug her music out.

—000—

This week TIM has been watching …

“Tolkien” starring Nicholas Houston and Lily Collins.  As it turned out this film was interesting but not at all what I was expecting.  A love story and an historical drama which proved watchable but the moral of this tale is read the synopsis first.  Not a Hobbit or a Wizard to be found anywhere.

Dio-Bolical Monday No: 3 – “Fools Gold” – Part 2

Now the good news is my Zealot order for a mine truck and a couple of pieces of track arrived quickly and safe and sound which meant this week I was able to spend time doing further work on the mine for my “Fools Gold” diorama.

img_0703

After checking that the track fitted into the entrance, and breathing a sigh of relief that it did, it was time to start carving the plaster board (see the left above versus the right above image).  With the cat litter covered inner walls now fully dried I could get some paint on them.  The emphasis being on the areas I would not be able to get to with a brush once the mine had been built up further.

img_0704img_0705img_0711

With the inside done as needed for now I was able to press on with the build as you can see from the above images.  The plaster board needed to be built up higher to effectively add a roof to the mine entrance and it also needed more carving and shaping.  Other bits of slate and stone were added here and there and then the finer texture was added as appropriate on top.  For this I used the plaster board dust and bits which were removed during the carving process.

The key thing to note about plaster board is it is absorbent.  Why is this significant TIM?  Well when it comes to painting it once it’s dry the paint will soak in randomly and automatically create shading of its own.

img_0712

As you can see from the image above the painting process has begun and the track is in place too but for now that is another week over.  All being well next week will see the mine entrance fully painted for this stage (more will need to be done later when it needs to blend in when other ground work is done) and the track and truck completed too.

If you are wondering about the unpainted plaster board carving on the left of the above image and why the track over hangs at the front I will explain next week.

Hans – Post Apocalypse Survivor

This weeks model is another 28mm figure from Reaper and goes by the name of Hans who just happens to be an apocalypse survivor.  I quite like the apocalypse genre and if I can find some more figures then I wouldn’t mind seeing what I can do by way of a diorama.  Can’t say I have any actual ideas of what to do but the right figures will inspire me I am sure although I would quite like to do something with a car in it.

As a figure I quite like Hans and will have to take a look at what else Reaper do.  I decided to go for a rugged look and settled on some facial stubble and combat trousers to toughen him up a little.  Just need to tidy up the edge of the base and decide if I am going to keep him and mount him on a little oak plinth.

TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 78)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

—000—

This weeks miniature is another from the Hasslefree range and the young lady goes by the name of Mythic Helen.  Another lovely sculpt as far as I am concerned and a relatively straight forward paint job with just a freehand eye painted to the shield.

The more observant of you might have noticed that the last couple of figures have not been stuck to the small oak plinths like other more recent figures.  Part of the reason for this is I feel I have lost my way a little with my base work.  I need to get my act together on this.  Even though the bases are only 25mm square they could be a little more interesting.  I need to do some research.  If I can go back and add to the bases then I will.  If not I will try and sell them on Ebay and start over.

Speed Painting

On a personal level I have never seen the point of speed painting.

I get that Gamers might prefer painted figures to non-painted figures and want them on the table quickly, even if they have been painted badly.  I can see why a commercial figure painter would want to churn things out as fast as possible.  I can even see the fun of a competition too but as none of these apply to me then I just don’t get it.

—000—

Slow Painting

I am happy to chug along at my own pace enjoying the painting as I go.  That said a I have noticed a worrying trend.  Whilst I have never been a fast painter I am getting slower and slower.  An age thing for sure, mental as well as physical.  The good news is my hands are still steady but on the flip side they periodically cramp up and my eyesight is not what it used to be.  For now all is well but I am starting to realise that at some point in the future I’m gonna be fucked and not in the way I had envisaged!

—000—

Give Me Five

This week I thought I would go with my top five greatest groups of all time.  Now if I’m being honest this one was a breeze to do and the reasons for that are simple.  To many groups these days are manufactured, last all of five minutes and their music is shit.  To be honest I feel sorry for young people these days.  Not only is the future of the planet fucked for them but they have no decent music of their own era to listen to either.  In no particular order:

  1. The Beatles
  2. Queen
  3. The Rolling Stones
  4. The who
  5. Led Zepplin

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Movie.  Now I am no dancer but when I have had sufficient to drink, by which I mean I am drunk, then in my own mind I am awesome at this!  She Who Must Be Obeyed might argue that though.

This week TIM has been watching …

“Ocean’s Eleven”.  Oddly this film and its various sequels had passed me by.  No reason for that specifically but having been reminded of that fact I thought I would give the film a go, after all it has quite a cast.  Now maybe because the film is a few years old now or the fact that I am becoming more and more of an old git but the truth of the matter is I didn’t think that much of it.  It was OK and it was watchable but some how I expected more and my overall conclusion was one of disappointment.

Dio-Bolical Monday No: 2 – “Fools Gold” – Part 1

This last week I have begun work on my “Fools Gold” diorama.  As the Table Top World cottage building is the smaller and much cheaper of the two (the other being the Wizard’s Tower) it made sense to use this model as the experimental one.  As with much of my diorama work my starting point was the base.  Not the base I would build but the base I would build the diorama on.

Now unless I plan to box the completed diorama up and store it away I prefer to have it on display in such a way that it doesn’t get covered in dust.  My wall storage units are not deep enough for displaying larger dioramas so I lean towards individual display cases which I buy from my mate Paul at Just Bases.  I generally buy the larger perspex cases he sells which measure 35cm wide by 20cm deep and 13cm high.  This then governs the size of the diorama I am about to do.  Armed with a ruler and my large cutting mat I worked out that this size base would be just about right for what I had in mind and duly placed my order with Paul.

Now under normal circumstances I would meet up with Paul and collect my base from him within a week or so but as we all know these times aren’t normal.  Meeting up wasn’t the problem but getting perspex was.  With all the screens going up everywhere to deal with Covid-19 perspex is an in demand material meaning it has become a little harder to get and more expensive to buy.  Oh goodie!  Paul assured me all was not lost and in a few weeks he would be stocked up, things would just take a little longer is all and so for now I am waiting on the base.

The good news is that because the design for this diorama incorporates a small stream section the base needs to be built up.  The MDF base that comes with the perspex case cannot be dug into so if I want to achieve depth I have to build upwards.  Does this make sense?  Well it does to me and if it is confusing you then all will become clear in due course as the diorama develops.

While I am waiting to collect the base from Paul I figured there were three things I could work on 1) the mine opening, 2) the Reaper figure and 3) painting the Table Top World cottage.  I decided I would start working on the mine entrance.

Plaster board has very much become my material of choice these days for a great many things.  Having raided a skip for some thrown out board a long time ago I went to the garage to review my stash.  Some suitable bits  were found and using an old tile saw I set about cutting some basic shapes to get me started.

img_0696img_0697

Exciting pictures huh?  I cut out a few of these and then did a Google search for some reference material.  I settled on the image below for a rough idea of what I wanted to achieve.

25d1a137229e8c27ed22f8ade7976ee2

I liked the idea of the mining track and wagon, the hole in the side of the hill and the wooden lintel to add some contrast to just the earth and stone.  I hadn’t consider the mining wagon and track before but thought it would be a great improvement so I thought I would try and see what I could find to buy.  As luck would have it Zealot Miniatures came up trumps so I ordered a couple of bits from them which hopefully will arrive shortly.  Fortunately their website had measurements for the track so I was able to press on with more of the mine construction.

img_0699img_0702

Now whilst things might look like a mess at the moment you should know that I am delighted with how this is shaping up so far.  Essentially this is nothing more than the skeleton to which the flesh will be added.  The plaster board is building up the side nicely, the wooden supports and lintel are in and slate chippings have been added to show exposed rock from the digging and blasting which created the whole in the first place.  The thing is I can’t do much more on the mine now until I get the Zealot delivery because I need to fix the track in place and be able to get to it for painting before I can put a proper top on the mine entrance.

While the mine work done so far was set a side to dry I thought I would take a look at the Cottage.

img_0676img_0678img_0679img_0677img_0680img_0681

It really is a lovely and highly detailed two part model.  On the positive side of things I can’t screw it up with glue (I don’t get on well with glue, whatever I do it goes every bloody where).  On the slightly negative side it is going to be a challenge to paint the inside.  Brush angles to paint the fireplace and windows is going to be tight.

The kits say they don’t need to be washed but I did so anyway and after they air dried I began to prime the two parts.  For as long as I can remember I have always primed using Humbrol White Matt Enamel diluted with White Spirit.  Unorthodox?  Most probably but it works for me.  Time now for the cottage to dry too so for now that is it for this week.

Hopefully next week I will press on with the mine if the Zealot bits come, if not I’ll start painting the cottage.

Ilnerik Sivanshin

The last couple of weeks have been pretty shitty in modelling terms.  Nothing has gone wrong on the painting and building side.  The problem has been that nothing really got done!  I am retired and in lockdown due to Covid-19 and some how still could not find the time to get any hobby activity in.  Why was this?  Well that is bloody good question to which the answer is Parish Council business.

In a mad moment a few years ago I agreed to get involved with parish affairs.  I fell for the line “its a breeze”.  It’s not.  The last two weeks have been insightful to say the least but my term in office will come to an end by year end (well that’s the plan).  Not because elections are due but because I intend to tell them to fuck off.  If Covid-19 has taught me anything it is that life is to short to spend time discussing meaningless shit, especially if it takes needless time away from my hobby.

The good news is that I did manage to get this little chap finished.  Over the last two week I have picked him up and put him down more times than I have been to the toilet this year.  Now there’s a thought to leave you with!

The figure itself is from the 28mm Reaper Pathfinder range and goes by the name of “Ilnerik Sivanshin”.  Now I do like Reaper figures as many of you know by now and this one piece casting had sufficient detail to be interesting.  If I have one disappointment it is with the base.  I was pretty happy with the paint job but in my haste to get something finished cut corners on the base.  I think the completed figure was deserving of something much better.  I’ll see how I feel about that in a few days time.  There is always the option to try and sell this one on Ebay and simply do another.
